Girls Like Us: Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon--and the Journey of a Generation, by Sheila Weller

From Publishers Weekly

The epic story of three generational icons, this triple biography from author and Glamour senior editor Weller (Dancing at Ciro’s) examines the careers of singer-songwriters Carole King, Joni Mitchell and Carly Simon, whose success reflected, enervated and shaped the feminist movement that grew up with them. After short sketches of their early years, Weller begins in earnest with the 1960s, switching off among the women as their public lives begin. A time of extremes, the 60s found folk music and feminist cultures just beginning to define themselves, while the buttoned-down mainstream was still treating unwed pregnant women, in Mitchell’s terms, like you murdered somebody (thus the big, traditional wedding thrown for King, pregnant by songwriting partner Gerry Goffin, in 1959). Pioneering success in the music business led inevitably to similar roles in women’s movement, but Weller doesn’t overlook the content of their songs and the effect they have on a generation of women facing a lot more choice, but with no one to guide them. Taking readers in-depth through the late 80s, Weller brings the story up to date with a short but satisfying roundup. A must-read for any fan of these artists, this bio will prove an absorbing, eye-opening tour of rock (and American) history for anyone who’s appreciated a female musician in the past thirty years. Review

"Captivating. A strong amalgam of nostalgia, feminist history, astute insight, beautiful music and irresistible gossip. Weller's grand ambition winds up fulfilled." -- Janet Maslin, The New York Times"Let's get one thing clear right from the start -- this is a fabulous book...Girls like Us unfolds with drama and panoramic detail. Written with a keen journalistic and, more importantly, female eye, [it] works as a healthy, long overdue counterweight to the endlessly repeated, male-sided version of rock 'n roll. Before these women broke the cultural sod during the rock 'n roll years, there were no girls like us. Now there are millions." -- Caitlin Moran, London Sunday Times"Even at 500-plus pages, the book goes down as easy as a Grisham yarn on a vacation flight... The only flaw to Girls Like Us is that it comes to an end. Few people lead lives as action-packed and spiritually opulent as Carole King, Joni Mitchell and Carly Simon did during such intensely interesting times. And few writers are able to impart so much freight with such vigor. The towering triumvirate got what it deserves." -- The Toronto Sun"A page-turner of the first order....a must read." -- The Boston Globe"As an avid music reader, sometime reviewer, and teen of the '60s myself, I was sure I knew just about everything there was to know about Carole, Joni, and Carly.... But Girls Like Us, an ambitious collective biography by six-time author and magazine journalist Sheila Weller, showed me exactly how much I didn't know. This absorbing, well-reported book chronicles a time when women in all walks of life were exercising new-found freedom. And as icons of that era, nobody did it better." -- Christian Science Monitor "Both scholarly and dishy. A superb journalist, Weller has managed to uncover a trove of unreported facts on her subjects." -- People **** (Pick of the Week)"When we were little, and someone said, `I love chocolate pudding," there was always some nutball who'd ask, "Do you want to marry it?' Well, I love Sheila Weller's Girls Like Us so much that I would marry it. This lush, beautifully-researched and lyrically written biography of the three women whose music was emblematic of the generation who pioneered the way for me and so many others is literate, bold, charming and ... cuddly....[E]very page brought a fresh surprise. Weller raised the bar for this book above even a classy celebrity bio... This book probably gave me more pure enjoyment than any but a handful I've read in years. If you're passionate about music -- and about passion -- you'll have to hand it to Sheila Weller for a bravura composition of her own." --Jacquelyn Mitchard the bestselling author of Still Summer, Cage of Stars, and the first Oprah Book Club selection, The Deep End of the Ocean, on WritersAsReaders.com"Incisive, painstakingly researched...Any woman who grew up during the late 1960s and '70s will fall head over heels for Sheila Weller's Girls Like Us." -- Ladies Home Journal"A sharp-eyed vision of the worlds which nourished these ambitious, determined and singular artists...Weller digs deep into [Joni Mitchell's] complex psychology and provides as close to an understanding of this difficult figure as anyone is likely to ever offer. An unfailingly entertaining read...a riveting story." -- Mojo"Juicy... I doubt I'll listen to Mitchell's songs again without considering the child she gave up for adoption... and her subsequent bouts with depression or hear the oft-married King's music without thinking of her tumultuous relationships. As for Simon, Weller captures fully both the richness and glamour of her romantic life and the profound sensitivity that made her especially vulnerable to ex-husband James Taylor's drug abuse and the cavalier charm of Warren Beatty." - USA Today

Last year I read Carly Simon's own memoir, Boys In The Trees and was blown away by how brilliant it is.I wanted more and recently went back to this AMAZING trilogy from Sheila Weller featuring the life and careers of Carly, Carole and Joni.I'd already read it 3 times but that didn't stop me.It's a very rare thing when a biography can tell one life well, keeping you riveted right to the last page. This time you get three! What a brilliant example of painstakingly well-researched and 'foot-noted' writing all the while being 'I can't put this down' entertaining.Ms Weller does an incredible job of weaving the three careers together showcasing how monumentally important they were at a time when Rock music was dominated by men.(Well it still is, but these 3 women broke through when there were few to none before them.)

"Girls Like Us" reads like a very long "Vanity Fair" celebrity profile. Author Sheila Weller dishes wheelbarrows full of gossip while ambitiously striving to place and evaluate her subjects--popular signer-songwriters Joni Mitchell, Carole King and Carly Simon--in the broader cultural context of the fast-changing roles of American women who came of age in the 1960s. I remembered listening to King's "It's Too Late," Simon's "You're So Vain," and Mitchell's "Help Me" on my little transistor radio as a kid. When I heard about "Girls Like Us," I knew I would read it. Once I picked it up, I had no desire to put it down.Other reviewers have induced gales of laughter calling out Weller's stylistic idiosyncrasies. While she maintains a zippy pace and sometimes has good insights, she writes many long sentences filled with hyphen-linked-adjective-chain descriptions (and parenthetical asides), and *footnote references into which she drops yet more names that she couldn't quite figure out how to shoehorn into the main text, which can leave a was-that-really-necessary taste in the reader's mouth (and speaking of taste, one of Carly's favorite restaurants was Elaine's, where she would lunch with Mia Farrow, who lost touch with Carly when she stated dating Woody Allen). Moving on . . .In spite of the inconsistent writing, I think most women of a certain age will find "Girls Like Us" as much fun to read as I did, at least until the end. Weller brings her subjects' childhoods to life and carries them along the road to fame, reporting in sometimes excruciating detail their bad choices in men and their resultant heartbreaks. I am no expert but Weller also seems to know enough about music that, without too much technical detail, she can explain to the lay reader why the songs worked as well as they did. You come to feel like you know Mitchell and Simon. King is more enigmatic as a person but gets involved in some interesting environmental activism. These women were all pioneers in claiming creative and personal autonomy among male contemporaries who had been brought up expecting women to be old-school and who called wives and girlfriends their "old ladies." They achieved dizzying levels of professional respect and material success. But among them they have eight failed marriages, and today their music is relegated to oldies stations. Maybe they are more content than Weller lets on. But you will find no happy denouement to lives lived in the brave, crazy fast lane in "Girls Like Us."

I loved this book. I lived through this era and could relate to all the singers. I liked the way the author wove the women's lives into the socio-political context of the times and used them to exemplify women's changing roles in US society. I also liked the structure of the book, the way the women's stories were interspersed in chapters, so that the stories alternated and weren't told individually in straightforward, linear fashion. After reading the book, I went out and bought a number of their CDs and dug through my attic and found many of the same recordings on vinyl. What a nice journey back into my youth through words and music. In fact, as I read the book (on my Kindle), I wished I could click on a link and listen to the songs that were being discussed. A CD to accompany the book would have been nice, though I know gaining the rights to the recordings would have been challenging. I was sorry when the book ended, and I bought copies for friends and relatives to enjoy too. I also recommended it to friends of mine, women "of a certain age" like me, to read with their women's book clubs.

As an overly sensitive and dramatic thirteen year old, I was obsessed with Joni Mitchell's "Blue." I would race home from school, throw myself on my tie-dyed comforter and cry as I listened to Joni sing "A Case of You." I wanted to grow up to be "cynical and drunk and boring someone in some dark café." Three years later it was "Court and Spark" and "Down to You." "Everything comes and goes, marked by lovers and styles of clothes." And 1976, the Bi-Centennial and my high school graduation, brought "Hejira." I thought if I ever had a daughter I would name her Amelia. I would play the live version for her with Pat Metheny's inspiring guitar solo so she could understand. I can tell you the story of my life through Joni Mitchell's music. The same goes for Carole King's "Tapestry" and Carly Simon's many hits. So imagine my delight to find Sheila Weller's terrific "Girls Like Us." This collection of stories about these groundbreaking women, their beginnings, their loves and losses, and most of all the SONGS... well, I devoured it in a matter of hours. The details and the well-researched facts ran down my chin like juice from a ripe peach. Ms. Weller is a journalist with the heart of a novelist. Anyone with an interest in music history and women's struggles to make it in the male-dominated world of rock'n'roll will find this book a source of unending pleasure.

This is an extremely detailed and impeccably researched social history of the women who made history in music during a male-dominated time. These women held their own in a business not friendly to young women, especially then. The book brought back memories of struggles we all had in our chosen professions. Looking back, we can see how courageous even the most anonymous of us were. For young women who now take for granted the trails we blazed, this history will prove to be a crucial reminder of what we fought for, and how fragile our wins remain.

Easy to follow recipes, great telling of history, love it.

It's mind-blowing to realize how many plants i considered weeds or merely ornamental are edible. If i ever get stuck in the wilderness, i'll now know many more foods to stay alive on.Unfortunately, many of them take extensive prep to make them palatable. But i'm planning to share a meal of them with adventurous neighbors.

Worth the purchase

ok

Carolyn Neithammer is great! You can't go wrong with her cookbooks. Her recipes are absolutely traditional, and the book also gives good wild-food foraging and processing information, as well as background information about the foods.

This book was not helpful and the foods just were not good. Carolyn makes it seem that the native americans were all peaceful living life. I'm not saying their savages either but they were sometimes more often vicious and they defended their own land. I mean, you want the truth not the disney version.

From the Inside Flap

In this brilliant look at the rise of political Islam, the distinguished political scientist and anthropologist Mahmood Mamdani brings his expertise and insight to bear on a question many Americans have been asking since 9/11: how did this happen? Mamdani dispels the idea of "good" (secular, westernized) and "bad" (premodern, fanatical) Muslims, pointing out that these judgments refer to political rather than cultural or religious identities. The presumption that there are "good" Muslims readily available to be split off from "bad" Muslims masks a failure to make a political analysis of our times. This book argues that political Islam emerged as the result of a modern encounter with Western power, and that the terrorist movement at the center of Islamist politics is an even more recent phenomenon, one that followed America's embrace of proxy war after its defeat in Vietnam. Mamdani writes with great insight about the Reagan years, showing America's embrace of the highly ideological politics of "good" against "evil." Identifying militant nationalist governments as Soviet proxies in countries such as Nicaragua and Afghanistan, the Reagan administration readily backed terrorist movements, hailing them as the "moral equivalents" of America's Founding Fathers. The era of proxy wars has come to an end with the invasion of Iraq. And there, as in Vietnam, America will need to recognize that it is not fighting terrorism but nationalism, a battle that cannot be won by occupation. Good Muslim, Bad Muslim is a provocative and important book that will profoundly change our understanding both of Islamist politics and the way America is perceived in the world today. "From the Hardcoveredition.

Written in the wake of 9/11, this book is an unparalleled treatise on the roots of Islamophobia. It should be on the bookshelf of every social justice activist.

Author Mahmood Mamdani is a scholarly writer and thinker who combines the intellect of a fact-seeking philosopher with the heart of a Gandhi. This book, _Good Muslim, Bad Muslim: America, the Cold War, and the Roots of Terror_ is classically written, that is, the thesis statement and argument is clearly presented in the Introduction; Chapters 1 through 4 present the evidence, and the concluding chapter tightens up the presentation of the evidence while synthesizing the facts with a solution to war, a proposal that will lead to world peace. (In my view, if the U.S.A. is to retain global leadership and respect, we have to show that the way to peace is through peace not permanent global warfare.) I won't restate Mamdani's argument here--other reviewers have done that--but let me encourage the reader to follow Mamdani's argument from beginning to end. Please do not cherry-pick the chapters or read only bits, for when you get to the concluding pages, the heart and soul of the author's wisdom and state-craft will be obvious. This book was originally published four years ago, and since then much of what Mamdani wrote has now become well-known: for example, there is no "war" in Iraq that can be "won," only a "political" solution will create peace, the militarization of the Christian right in the U.S.A. is similar to the militarization of Islam, and many of Ronald Reagan's policies have resulted in current U.S. troubles. What makes this book a must read is the author's synthesis of facts and his love of humanity. There is some tough-love medicine that Americans must acknowledge in order to become world leaders; every educated voter owes to himself or herself to study this book.

I think that this book, "Good Muslim, Bad Muslim" is one of the finest books that I have read on US foreign policy that has been written in the past 50 years. I am very impressed with the quality of the author's scholarship and the quality of his writing and the quality of the insights that he makes. I agree with reviewer Steele, this might well be Nobel winning material. The author makes one gaff in which he provides constructive criticism regarding a US satellite nation's atrocities and the tendency of America to not want to even acknowledge that nation's errors. There were several times where I read material for which I wanted a reference, but it was not provided. The references are summed up in a scholarly manner at the end. I give the topic an A+ and I give the quality of the writing an A. This is an excellent read and it is well worth the purchase price, new. It is one of those books that, if read, will change your outlook.

I found this book to be highly informative and a must read for anyone interested in the current events of our days. I say this because much if not most of the current events and struggles faced by our country the USA and the world as a whole, have their roots somewhere else. This other place is the Cold War, the various proxy wars fought, the alliances between political and societal institutions, the various American and Soviet administrations with their ideological wars, and beyond. It is a must read if you truly wish to understand the roots of modern political terror, and if you truly wish to start to create a solution to this problem. One can not create a viable solution unless one allows themselves to look at all facets of history and not be confined to biased views. 5/5 stars with my full recommendation.

As described.

As a British reader, it's fascinating to read all the reviews of this book which describe it as "biased". Having lived in the US for several months now, it is a constant source of astonishment to me how biased (pro-Israeli government) the US media is in covering the Israel-Palestine conflict.I'm not just talking about the European media: Haaretz (a respectable left-wing newspaper in Israel) has the following to say about operation 'Cast Lead': "Six months ago Israel asked and received a cease-fire from Hamas. It unilaterally violated it when it blew up a tunnel, while still asking Egypt to get the Islamic group to hold its fire." ([...] You would never read anything like this in the mainstream US media. So I find Mamdani's analysis to be pretty even handed and insightful. He has done the research to back up his thoroughgoing historical analysis of the conflict. I urge people to read this account to see how much of the rest of the world views the Israel-Palestine conflict and the rest of the US' 'interventions' in other nations over the past fifty years. Unlike many US citizens, the rest of the world has neither forgiven nor forgotten the US' actions, and as a Brit I know only too well that the actions of an imperial nation have consequences that last decades and affect untold millions.Mamdani's thesis is simply this: only by understanding the historic context of current events and acting accordingly can we create a world of peace and mutual respect.

Excellent work, great professor, highly recommend.

My sister and I do a monthly book club for my nephew, and this was my most recent pick. Although my 2-year-old nephew was a bit perplexed at the idea of tushies wandering off, my family loved this story. The adults were so amused by it that nearly everyone has read the story with him.The artwork is really cute, I love the colors, and it really does make you appreciate a certain unappreciated part of the anatomy. If you're a parent who likes bedtime stories that aren't SUPER long, this is a great selection. The book is relatively short, with just a few lines of text on each page. The fact that it all rhymes makes it kind of fun to read aloud, too.Overall, highly recommended. I'm guessing a 4 or 5-year-old might enjoy it more than my almost 3-year-old nephew (he doesn't find tushies very funny yet), but it's a funny book either way.

There are other books for kids that are specifically designed to educate, and maybe entertain. This is a book that will definitely entertain, and probably educate. The analogy that comes to mind immediately is the verse of W.S. Gilbert. Like Gilbert's work, the verse here is well done, clever, and designed to please the audience. The story is very cute, and the rhymes are a constant, pleasant surprise. The attention to scansion is striking, which should please the "well versed." The illustrations are fun, and considering their subject, very tasteful.Given the choice between this book and more serious children's books, I think a goodly number of kids would choose this one. There are other books to shape young characters and to contemplate the eternal verities. This one was designed to be fun, and it is.Bravo!

My niece LOVES this book. we read it everytime I see her, and she knows it by heart. It is hilarious. One day I called her and while talking, I mentioned my tushy was missing. She was worried for weeks, until she saw me. I didn't think she thought I was serious!

Just what kid's love. A playful "lets pretend" story - involving a body part, no less. What if our derrieres really decided it was time for a vacation? That the story is told in rhymes makes it more fun, easier to repeat along with the reader, and easier for a child to learn to read himself. The illustrations are wonderful. How would you imagine a tushy to look while sneaking out of town? Adults will enjoy reading the story at their kids' bedtime. But check in the morning to be sure your tushy is still attached!

Very cute book!

Very cute story, but weirds out my 3 year old. Not his favorite, but I enjoyed it.

Very fun to read to my 3-yr-old grandson who is just beginning to play "pretend".

Kids Looooooooove this book!

Review

For a beginner not to avail themselves of this book is unpardonable. More experienced drivers will also be making a mistake to avoid it. You may not agree with everything it says about racing, but it will make you think about your driving in competition. -- Jim Kearney - SportsCar Magazine, May 1998No racer, or driver school participant should be without this book. -- Bob Roemer - Roundel Magazine, May 1998Years in the making, it may be the best book on race-driving technique to date. Lopez has seen every mistake that can possibly occur on a racetrack, and his book is designed to help you avoid them. "Going Faster" is not a substitute for the Skip Barber three-day racing class, but considering the fact that it's more than $2000 cheaper, it's the next best thing to being there. -- Steven Cole Smith - Car & Driver Magazine, August , 1998

It goes into a lot of detail that will require multiple reads to comprehend. I am a beginner and this book will be a great reference. I plan to re-read it a few times after some driver education events to continue to understand all of the content.

I purchased Going Faster! to learn more about racing. I purchased it based on all of the positive comments about the diagrams and theoretical explanations that make sense. I agree completely with this reviews. There is a lot of discussion and real-world examples. However, the book seems very dated. The author uses Sebring's course as the main focus of the exercises. For those that haven't driven at Sebring, it can be confusing. In addition, the racing classes and car examples are also pretty dated. The Taurus SHO was used as a showroom stock example, and this is not to be confused with the new 2010-up Ford Taurus SHO. The SHO referenced in the book is the FWD-based Ford Taurus with the Yamaha V8 engine. In addition, the author admitted that they did not have any experience with AWD (all-wheel drive) vehicles, which have become very prevalent since 2000. Many supercars and sports cars now feature AWD, from Porsche 911s, Lamborghini Gallardo, Audi R8, the new 2010 Taurus SHO, Subaru Impreza WRX STI, Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, to the Lamborghini Murcielago. The way the authors spoke of AWD made it seem like AWD was some alien and mystical technology. Most of the strategies apply to RWD cars, and that was fine for me since I grew up driving RWD/V8 vehicles. I became interested in FWD and AWD at a later stage and I don't have a bias towards any drivetrain setup. Each of these have their merits and drawbacks, and I was more interested in learning the fundamentals in racing. This book covers the basics up to just enough information to make it very expensive (getting into the different classes, buying the equipment, etc...) but there's not many how-to's on how to mitigate problems like brake fade. There are other books for subjects like that!Pros: Easy to read, very concise topics, great way to get into racing techniques.Cons: Dated materials and examples. Sebring is the only track the author writes about. AWD isn't covered, FWD does have some coverage. The cars mentioned in the book are also very dated.Overall: 4/5 stars

Great structure and flow. Gives great advice on how to learn from the book and reasons for what comes first and last.Great explanations, diagrams, and scenarios.Overall great.I already knew at least half of the topics discussed relatively well, but the great analysis and step by step walkthrough of each scenario greatly strengthened my knowledge in every way and gave me better discipline on what I should be focusing on during the race.It definitely played a part in my progression from ~29 seconds to ~27.5 seconds a lap.-Casual go-karting in sd

I couldn't "swallow" this book at once, it took me three sessions during a couple of months to figure out that amongst the good books on motor sports this one serves the role of a guidebook, of a manual of a beginning competition driver, best of all. What do I mean by "good books"? Competition Driving by Alain Prost, The Technique of Motor Racing by Piero Taruffi, Driving in Competition by Alan Johnson, Sports Car and Competition Driving by Paul Frere, to name a few. All of them are wise and not overcomplicated, and have no buzz about the success stories of champions, the buzz which is useless for the reader interested in driving techniques.I've found out that the definition of oversteer and understeer here is the most complete and most correct amongst the books that I've listed, yet without the formulas that may frighten somebody. It took the author 17 pages full of illustrations to explain these modes of car behaviour. This is the first big advantage of this book.Another major advantage of this book is the serious attention of the author to the role of hardware, which is sometimes overlooked by the other writers, who claim that hardware is important, but do not write in-depth chapters about it. The book has may illustrations and explanations how the center of gravity, wheel base, and the suspension elements like springs, shock absorbers and the roll bars affect longitudal and lateral load transfer speed and motion, which occurs during acceleration, braking and cornering; how various adjustment affect the weight applied to each of the wheels, and how this affects car behaviour. He is the only author to mention the effect of download on coefficient of friction of the wheel, and why the total friction of the wheels is at its highest level when the download on each wheel is the same, i.e. the car is balanced. The other writers in this case did only mention that to keep the car balanced is important without a sound explanation. The book has an appendix with the listing of racing resources, it has a good bibliography and a useful glossary and an index.I highly recommend this book, although sometimes I had a feeling that more humour and liveliness would have made it even better. Please also consider buying "Skip Barber - Going Faster" DVD in addition to this book.

I bought this book to help me get better laps times in GTR 2. GTR 2 is such a realistic simulation that arcade driving techniques just don't work. This book is absolutely amazing. It covers every possible detail---maintaining traction in corners, braking and cornering strategies and techniques, spin prevention and recovery, etc. By applying the lessons in this book, I have greatly improved lap times in GTR 2, and I also have a greater understanding of the physics and planning involved in modern racing. The level of detail in this book is astounding. No details are left out. In the chapter covering shifting, they explain in detail why you should blip the throttle when downshifting, including the effect that blipping the throttle has on the engine, transmission, and grip at the rear wheels. I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone who is even remotely interested in automobile racing.

Every. Single. Female. Main character. They turn deaf-mute and never voice the simple truths that would allow them to avoid the unnecessary bullying, unfair harassment, and spiteful craziness that only females are capable of unleashing on another female. However, that would reduce the page count and drama in the book, so instead of solid, interesting and worthwhile plotlines, we're following unstable, mind-numbing craziness that a ravaged, mentally unbalanced, bipolar freak has decided to insinuate into her new picture-perfect life. Except, she (Analise, Samantha's mother) hasn't figured out that her fiance's sons are too smart and worldly to be manipulated, or that their mother is more ruthless, cunning, wealthy and powerful than her ex-husband ever would be.What I have difficulty with is Tijan's predilection for redundancy whereby our girl goes into repeated, near-verbatim internal monologues inside her head that sounds exactly like the ones she's slipped into on at least three to seven other parts of this and the previous book about Sam, Mason and Logan's pre-college year and half. It. Is. Exhausting. It is annoying as much as it is frustrating to read, so much so that I feel like I'd prefer to be in a coma.Reality is, no sane, intelligent, and talented young girl who is as physically gorgeous as Sam would have put up with the immature and dangerous pranks that were intended to hurt and maim Sam. That she didn't think or realize other options were open to her might have been the writer's way of emphasizing how manipulated and controlled she's been by Analise all her life; however, it blatantly contradicts the keen intelligence that Sam shows at other times. Only when her emotions, other people's feelings or common sense are in question does she always come off as mute, ridiculously moronic and basically clueless. Then, it's like a switch has flipped and her brain has fried or frozen. Our heroine turns into a moronic, empty birdbrain who can only think as though her whole world exists between her legs. I never counted, but in too many of her books on too many pages, Tijan has the female mc groaning, feeling throbbing between her legs, wanting to touch or do other things to the male mc's cut abs, pecs, chest, etcetera, etcetera. There isn't any variation. No other technique or adjectives. No imagery. One point two stars for this one. It is so ridiculously stupid.

I like that this started where we left off in the first book. The drama with all the mean girls was just as intense. It looks like they might be getting some of their own medicine in the next book. I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen with that.Samantha’s Mom played a big part in this book. That woman is cray cray. How she has James devotion is beyond me.Samantha was tougher in the first book and she lost some of that in this one. We got to see more about her past and what she’s been through so a lot more emotions from her.Mason was just as awesome and he’s my favorite character out of all of them. I love his devotion to Samantha and Logan.Something seemed off with Nate. Not sure if that is leading us into something.Logan is still the life of the party but we learned there was some jealousy towards Nate and Masons friendship. Please let Logan stay far away from Tate! This is one big drama series that is pretty angsty but it’s addicting.

I remembered the series and wondered why I didn't purchase this one. So I purchased it and regretted it.The plot itself is good but the flow is very slow and repetitive. The flashback Samantha has is the same over and over. Then every time you turn around she is getting a "headache".Each time the person "Raz" is mentioned, you have to be reminded his eyes are glazed.Interaction between Mason and Samantha is also the same. "His eyes darkened", "the heated looks", and even sex was the same "thrust thrust done". Made the book boring and repetitive!Samantha needed to grow a backbone. She finally does towards the end but still, come on. Everyone walks all over her and she allows it.Even though I like "the time frame" of the book I will NOT read any more of this series.

THANKYOUTHANKYOUTHANKYOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am soooo freakin happy I was turned on to these books!!! WOW......just, wow! I am NOT a big fan of the 'high school" drama scene style books...I am just a little bit to old, and just to mature to get into those style books anymore, but Man-O-Man did Tijan put a twisted on what I thought was going to be a "high school" read TO a "very mature" for all their ages, but considering the back ground stories, and what each character in this book go through, it makes them seem a lot older in the writing! GREAT JOB TIJAN!!!!!!!! I can not put these books down! I just keep reading and buying them ALL!!! I have to know what happens!!! I. HAVE. TO. KNOW.!!!!!!! hee hee I am still reading the 4 installment to this series, but I can already tell by the writing that I am going to LOVE each and ever single one of these books....So far I am on the 4th book and I still saying they are the BEST!!! (that is saying something for me to say that)! If you are looking for a Wonderful Story line, and Heroes, and Angst, and Laughing, and and and....Steamy, Hot, Sexy moments of pleasure and fun and suspense; Well, then, you have a found THEM!!!! Read on my fellow readers....YOU. HAVE. TO . READ. THESE. BOOKS.!!!!!!!!! A really EPIC story line with a love story so deep you forget YOU are not involved with these characters!!!!! One shouldn't have too much difficulty imagining a two-disc Van Halen compilation entitled The Best of Both Worlds. The first disc will showcase the David Lee Roth-fronted version of the band that reenergized hard rock with its titanic 1978 debut and peaked commercially with 1984's, uh, 1984. Disc two will take up where David Lee was left off--from 1986 on, when Sammy Hagar (and, briefly, Hagar-sound-alike Gary Cherone) took over the mike. Well, unfortunately, that's not the anthology assembled this time out. Rather than sequence the selections chronologically and, in the process, display the band's evolution (or devolution, depending on where one stands in the great Roth/Hagar debate), the band has opted for a more eccentric sequencing strategy. After the opener "Eruption" confirms the sass and chops of the young VH, three fairly uninspired new tracks featuring a back-in-the-fold (for now?) Hagar interrupt the flow. Unfortunately, the flow never really recovers, as Roth and Hagar tracks leapfrog one another through the next 29 selections. Three live Hagar takes on songs from the Roth era finish things off in confusing fashion. Obviously, there's plenty of powerful music here, but do fans really need a lesson in what happens when worlds collide? And didn't David Lee earn at least one photo in the package? --Steven Stolder

Since the band's sound and popularity were built on the records they made with Roth, there was no way for Van Halen to ignore his contribution, but they do their damnedest to diminish it here. There are no pictures of Diamond Dave to be found in the artwork (unless you count the miniature reproductions of the sleeves of Van Halen and Women and Children First) and David Wild's liner notes mention him only twice -- once when he joins the band, once when he leaves -- while conspicuously lavishing praise on Sammy. As petty as this swipe is, it's understandable and could even be forgivable if the two discs were well assembled, but they're sabotaged by an absurd sequencing that alternates a Dave song with a Sammy song for the bulk of the entire collection. This is a jarring sequencing, to say the least, causing a whiplash change of tone, mood, and attitude with every song, which are otherwise well-chosen, containing the big hits from each era (the only exception is the boneheaded move to end the collection with three cuts from the 1993 live album Live: Right Here, Right Now, all Diamond Dave songs sung by Sammy). This attempt to elevate Sammy above Dave in the canon is a bit like trying to say Ronnie James Dio was more important to Black Sabbath than Ozzy Osbourne -- a piece of flat-out hyperbole that does a disservice to what the singer actually achieved. David Lee Roth was larger than life, a gonzo performance artist touched with genius who helped Van Halen seem bigger, sillier, grander than any other metal band; with him in front, they were giants, they were golden gods. Sammy Hagar was his opposite, an everyman who sang about girls and tequila, somebody who brought Van Halen back down to earth. Since part of the fun of rock stars is to have them be larger than life, a manifestation of the audience's dreams, fans naturally gravitate toward the Diamond Dave years, but there are merits to both approaches and both resulted in good to great music. But that's hard to appreciate on Best of Both Worlds, when the Dave and Sammy tunes are mixed up with no regard for chronological, musical, or emotional cohesiveness.

Although this compilation includes almost every essential Van Halen tune you would likely hear on the radio, there are some flaws. For whatever reason, the songs are not presented in chronological order, which really throws off the flow of the songs. The 3 songs recorded for this album are pretty good, but nothing too special to rave about. The inclusion of the live tracks is pretty redundant and would have served better to add 3 more different songs. The remastering however is great, especially for the Van Hagar tracks that were not remastered before(here's hoping that Warner Bros. remasters those 4 albums soon like they did for the Roth catalogue). If you are purchasing the MP3 album, please beware that Eruption and Panama intros are cut for some reason, not sure if the files are corrupted but since no previous review has mententioned it, it must be only on Amazon's MP3s. If you're new to Van Halen and want the best starting point for the right price or just a casual fan who wants all the hits you hear on the radio, this is the best bet, just beware of the download.

VH is bar far my favorite band but it cyst to exist after Dave left. The music made with the other guy was not memorable or as exciting. They became more pop bubble gum. With David the band was hard rock with occasionally a pop feel, with the other guy they were a pop band with an occasional hard rocker. Eddie, himself, said in an interview, after he became sober he went through the lyrics and said "how did I let these pass". Says a lot.

I wish this gave access to uncompressed\lossless recordings...I would pay almost double for it.But as for this specific album...seriously, if you have gotten this far in the review and have not purchased it yet, then DO IT NOW!BUY IT!Music like this is gone, mostly recyclable junk is what's coming out today (some good stuff here and there, but not like these gems)...we need a new music resurgence...

"Finish What Ya Started" doesn't finish, it just cuts off. The phrase "Remastered Album Version" connotes that the album version has been worked on by a "master." Obviously low standards for being awarded the title of "master" these days, grade inflation run amuck.Aside from that...You know the songs and you know if you like them. Here they are all together. It saves having to bring/load a bunch of CDs, if you prefer that to mp3 versions.I should note that it comes in one of the crappy cardboard foldy cases instead of a nice sturdy jewel case.

Powerful collection of songs from lead singers David Lee Roth & Sammy Hagar. For religious reasons i had to delete a few songs but overall very enjoyable. Check out David Lee Roth's orginal rendition of "Aint talking bout love then check out Sammy Hagar's live version of the same song. I personally think Sammy Hagar can't touch the original verson but that's my opinion, yours may differ?

Glad they remastered these classic tracks. I only wish more labels would follow this example
