Review

"The Where, The Why, and The How is the authors' attempt to revel in those "mysteries that can't be entirely explained in a few mouse clicks." Volvovski and her coauthors selected 75 not quite answerable questions--from "Where did life come from?" to "Why do cats purr?" to "How does gravity work?"--and let artists and scientists loose on them. The artists created whimsical illustrations, and the scientists responded with thoughtful essays." - Smithsonian.com"Far from the brassy computer renderings of cosmic events, for instance, in these pages you'll see star births described in pen and ink, antimatter realized in collage, and a hand-painted black hole." - Discover MagazineA New York Times Bestseller in Science and Non-Fiction E-books! "The result is scientific, yet with tongue planted firmly in cheek. Why do we blush? includes a discussion of blood vessels and the sympathetic nervous system, along with a drawing of a naked man with his internal organs exposed (you'd blush too)." - Cassandra Willyard, WNYC's Studio 360"75 contemporary artists such as Jacob Magraw, Jen Corace, and Patrick Kyle were commissioned to create the book's original artwork, leading to a huge variety of visual styles throughout. Some illustrations are, like the front cover pictured above, akin to those of a beautified textbook, but the most are simply works of art; literal, metaphorical, or satiric imagery to accompany the text." -The Verge

If you love science and you love art, you will find this book as irresistible as we do. The authors invited seventy-five artists to make illustrations based on questions posed to fifty scientists. Each two-page spread features the scientist’s question and answer on one side and an artist’s interpretation on the other. The questions are ones most of us all wonder about: What existed before the Big Bang? What is the origin of the moon? Why do we blush? How do migrating animal find their way back home? What did dinosaurs eat? How much of human behavior is predetermined? How do squirrels remember where they bury their nuts? Why do we hiccup? Why are humans and chimps so different if they have nearly identical DNA?Even if there is no definitive answer (and sometimes there is not), you still get a pretty good explanation, and a summary of the state of the knowledge about the question at the present time. Most of the entries are succinct, clear, and understandable to the lay person, written by an array of contributors including physicists, aerospace engineers, biologists, research librarians, and quite a few professors. The illustrations are outstanding. Sometimes you may not quite “get” them until you read the accompanying science piece, and then their cleverness impresses you all the more. The artists chosen by the compilers are from a mix of backgrounds, and include comic artists as well as fine artists. Most of the pictures are ones I wish I had on my walls. At the end of the book, there are helpful indexes of not only of the questions explored, but of the names of contributing scientists and artists. This book will provide endless stimulation, both intellectually and visually. The authors said their goal was to bringing back a sense of wonder in the age of Google and Wikipedia, and they have certainly succeeded.

“The Why, the Where, and the How” is interesting, if you can understand it. I found this book portraying “the wondrous mysteries of science” was frequently beyond my ability to comprehend. Subjects like “What is antimatter?” and “What happens to time as you approach the speed of light?” carry a language of their own and almost require a physics background to make much sense. Also, “theories” is the operative word for many of these mini-chapters. The confession that scientists’ conclusions “might be” accurate dots these pages, especially those pages dealing with quantum mechanics. In spite of difficulties in the reading material, some chapters are very interesting. For example, the section on whales' songs was fascinating, and I wished it had been longer. As well, the interactive table of contents and index were very helpful in locating specific topics. The artists’ illustrations are also interesting, although the Kindle format can’t do justice to them.Bottom line: The concept of this book is good, but sometimes the actualities of scientific dialogue can get in the way for ordinary readers.

Don't judge a book by its cover. Because if you do you'll look at this book and, much like I did, expect the illustrations to be more explanatory, much like you'd see in science textbooks. However, the artwork is more like what you'd see hanging in a coffee house. The artists seem to have done more artistic interpretations of the concepts. Some of the work is very nice, but much of it is mediocre. That's unfortunate because the actual information from a bevy of scientists is very accessible to the layperson. If only the art had aided that accessibility!

I enjoy books on science, but this one is mediocre. The "questions" it answers are done very briefly and the answers often boil down to "no one knows" with some theories given. The art work sometimes is interesting but often adds little to the understanding or the enjoyment of the topic.

Love the illustrations so much. The articles are brief enough to allow a causal read for anyone dropping by for only a moment. I confess, I bought it with the intention of slicing out favorite images and framing them, but once I had the handsome volume in hand, I couldn't bear the thought. And generally, I have few qualms about cannibalizing books for their art.Lovely, informative, and worth the purchase.

A lot of fun, terrific illustrations. Nice hardbound book that I hope will be in our family for a long time. If you'd like to see some more examples of the illustrations (all of which are full-page, color), I recommend checking out the review at the blog "Book by it's Cover".

Great Coffee Table Book, it's a fun 'intro to topic' book but like just about any textbook has a few errors so I wouldn't suggest for heavy learning purposes, but on the flip side they make the subject matter fun for novices (children, etc.)

A very good little overview of some of the more interesting questions in current science, answered by well-qualified individuals and interestingly (though sometimes confusingly) illustrated. A nice little mind-massage.

Review

"An outstanding volume for providers, students, and researchers who want to understand not only what to do when conducting exposure therapy, but also how to do it, and why it works. The second edition integrates the latest research on the learning processes that are critical to making exposures work, and provides clear guidance on how to use the research findings to directly improve clinical practice. Clients treated by providers who have read this book should be in good hands!"--Bethany A. Teachman, PhD, Department of Psychology, University of Virginia "This second edition remains the definitive book on exposure therapy for anxiety-related problems. It is comprehensive, clearly written, practical, and fully updated to reflect contemporary research and theory on exposure-based treatments. This book is an invaluable resource for novice and expert therapists alike, and it should be required reading for any student training in cognitive-behavioral therapy."--Martin M. Antony, PhD, ABPP, Department of Psychology, Ryerson University, Toronto, Ontario, Canada "The authors do an excellent job of dispelling therapists' common fears about implementing exposure therapy. They review the evidence base for the approach and separate facts from myths. Clinicians treating trauma may have concerns about retraumatizing patients; instead of dismissing these concerns, the authors validate them and provide solutions. I recommend this book as a 'must read' for clinicians at all levels of practice."--Johanna Kaplan, PhD, Director, Washington Anxiety Center of Capitol Hill, Washington, DC “The authors do a splendid job of presenting the core clinical features that cut across all anxiety and trauma-related disorders. In so doing, they provide the reader a helpful heuristic for assisting in case formulation and treatment planning. Coverage of safety behaviors and their role in maintaining and exacerbating anxiety is particularly important, given that many clinicians still instruct anxiety patients to utilize safety behaviors to cope with their anxiety. I will assign this book as a required reading for my practicum course in evidence-based treatments."--Michael J. Telch, PhD, Professor of Psychology and Founding Director, Laboratory for the Study of Anxiety Disorders, The University of Texas at Austin "Exposure has served as the treatment of choice for anxiety disorders for decades, despite many new therapies trying to take its mantle. Yet too many clinical practitioners either avoid using exposure or implement it suboptimally. Already the go-to resource on exposure therapy, this second edition elegantly balances the latest science and art of delivering this most effective therapy in the most effective manner."--Peter J. Norton, PhD, School of Psychological Sciences, Monash University, Australia"An excellent compendium of information on the nature and utilization of exposure therapy in the treatment of anxiety disorders. The book is well written and thoughtfully organized, making it a worthy resource for practicing clinicians and a valuable guide for the training of health care professionals in the application of cognitive-behavioral interventions." (on the first edition) (PsycCRITIQUES 2011-12-14)"A comprehensive manual for clinicians detailing the application of exposure therapy in the treatment of a broad range of anxiety problems....The book serves not only as an evidence-based account of the model and rationale behind exposure therapy, but also as an aid to individualizing treatment according to patient nuances, whether overt or subtle....An invaluable source of reference for any clinician, regardless of experience level." (on the first edition) (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy 2011-10-03)

The Venona Secrets: Exposing Soviet Espionage and America's Traitors

Amazon.com Review

Some historians and journalists are starting to regard the cold-war-era American Communist Party as nothing more than a quaint club of polite if misguided ideologues. In The Venona Secrets, Herbert Romerstein and Eric Breindel intend to create a new impression of treacherous Americans "who willfully gave their primary allegiance to a foreign power, the USSR.... For Communists, true patriotism meant helping to make the world a better place by advancing the interests of the Soviet Union in any way possible." By using the now-celebrated Venona documents--top-secret Soviet cables sent between Moscow and Washington, D.C., in the 1940s--Romerstein and Breindel tell a frightening story of how deeply spies penetrated the U.S. government. There was the famous case of Alger Hiss, whose guilt as a Soviet spy is now beyond doubt thanks to Venona. Less well known, but still important, were the roles of Harry Hopkins in Franklin Delano Roosevelt's White House and Harry Dexter White in the Treasury Department. Romerstein, a veteran cold warrior, and Breindel, the former editorial-page editor of The New York Post (he died before the book's publication, at the age of 42), are not the first to discuss the Venona papers in depth--readers of The Haunted Wood, by Allen Weinstein and Alexander Vassiliev, and Whittaker Chambers, by Sam Tanenhaus, will know much of the story. Yet this may its most aggressive telling. Romerstein and Breindel include necessary chapters on the Hiss-Chambers dispute, the Elizabeth Bentley spy ring, and the charges against Julius and Ethel Rosenberg. They are particularly forceful in arguing that journalist I.F. Stone and atomic scientist Robert Oppenheimer were Soviet spies. Another target--and a provocative one--is Albert Einstein, whom they describe as "tainted" by his indirect ties to Soviet intelligence. The Venona Secrets will make heads turn, and it will show that the debates over the cold war and its meaning can be as hot now as they were then. --John J. Miller

The Venona Secrets will make heads turn, and it will show that the debates over the cold war and its meaning can be as hot now as they were then. --John J. Miller ---John J. MillerThe VENONA Secrets offers further analysis of the worldwide WWII KGB/GRU espionage operations described in the encrypted telegrams (called VENONA) decoded after the war by US Army and British codebreakers and made public only in 1995 by NSA. These once top secret messages led to the arrest and conviction of the Rosenbergs and Klaus Fuchs, while providing the basis for shutting down many of the Soviet wartime espionage netowrks. They also documented the charges of Soviet espionage in America made by former Communist agents Whitticker Chambers, Elizabeth Bentley and a number of others. This book, as opposed the the several others written on the topic, supplies new material in at least three areas. First, author Roemrstein's long experience in the field has allowed him to add documented perspective on the US Communist Party relationship to the Soviet secret services. In at least one case, that of Ruth Olsen, mentioned but unidentified in the VENONA material released, he provides the missing links. He also adds new details obtained from the so-called MAST decrypts that discussed mainly administrative matters between Soviets overseas and Moscow. Second, the authors apply their experience to three cases about which other authors have been more cautious: Harry Dexter White, Robert Oppenheimer, and Harry Hopkins, while discussing new materail on Albert Einstein and his tryst with a Soviet agent. Many liberal academics and others who continue to make the argument 'that the Rosenbergs and Hiss were innocent victims of lies told by Chambers, Bentley and the FBI', will scramble to find alternative explanations for the analysis that convinces Romerstein and Breindel that White was a cooperating communist agent before WWII started for America, and that Oppenheimer was the same during the war. It doesn't stop there. Perhaps most controversial of all conclusions is that Harry Hopkins (FDR's principal personal advisor) was a Communist before and VENONA's Agent 19 serving the Soviets during the war. Few will challenge the validity of evidence presented, though there is likely to be heartburn and skepticism with regard to the authors' analysis and conclusions. The judgment as to who is right is one for the reader. Third, while the focus of the book is mainly on America, the anti-semetic policies of the Soviet Union generally get a chapter based on new material. There are also chapters on the KGB use of jouralists as agents, the extensive KGB penetration of the OSS (America's wartime national intellignece service), and an appendix with selected VENONA documents to give the reader an idea of the raw evidence. For the scholar, intellignece historian, and the reader who has long sought to learn the truth and make some sense of the Communist activities in the USA during the period 1920 - 1950, The VENONA Secrets is a postive contribution that should be studied carefully. --By A Customer -Over the years there has been a vast array of books about Soviet espionage and its American helpers: Alger Hiss, the Rosenbergs, Harry Dexter White, Nathan Gregory Silvermaster, and so many more. No matter the evidence, some members of the US press and intelligentsia refused to come to grips with the truth and admit that some of their great liberal heroes were actually agents of Stalin. Herbert Romerstein's book proves once and for all that they were all guilty as charged. During the Second World War the United States intercepted and decoded secret soviet radio transmissions from Moscow to their agents in America. Using these documents, and materials from Soviet archives, Romerstein narrates the incredible story of just how deeply KGB agents penetrated the American government to its highest levels. Romerstein's encyclopedic knowledge of the subject, based on years of research and study, puts the entire tragic story into historical pespective and makes fascination reading. If you are going to buy just one book of history this year, this is it! --By A Customer

This book contains a treasure trove of detailed information about who was involved in Soviet espionage during the development of the atomic bomb, gleaned from the collection of decrypted messages between spies/operatives in the U.S. and the Russian intelligence agencies. It lays to rest once and for all any doubts about the guilt of the Rosenbergs. It is shocking to see the high levels of U.S. government that were infiltrated during this period. This book is not an easy read - incredible amounts of detail, and the organization of material leaves a bit to be desired, especially in the early chapters. But stick with it for the detailed chapters later on and you will be rewarded.

If you are alive, a breathing American of any political strip, read this book. Most people do not know about the Venona files since the secrets started spilling out decades after the WWII when so many of the actors are already dead, the Soviet Union has fallen, and we are facing other enemies. Don't be dissuaded. The biggest war in modern history, 50 million people killed, and America was TOTALLY manipulated in all its foreign and much of its domestic policies by Jo Stalin and the Soviet Union. Romerstein shows us the cables, the secrets, and describes in clear detail, much like a real life mystery novel, how the Soviets infiltrated the top levels of American society, all the way to the White House, and caused decisions to be made by FDR an others to support the USSR ( and Chinese communists) at our own expense. If you don't think a small cabal of dedicated, committed people can wield huge influence that results in millions of deaths, you need to read this book.

A good book to read, detailing unclassified version of Soviet encrypted cables data, decrypted by the NSA predecesor, US Army Intelligence in mid-forties of the 20th century. This piece should be read by all students of modern US history to understand how intellectually corrupt the left was and ... still is, when they deny / denied the existence of the Soviet spy networks in the highest circles of the US government. In addition to this book I recommend a much broader and detailed expose of the Soviet communist spy networks written by KGB General Sudoplatov - Special Tasks. While the Venona work discovered the existence of communist spies within the US wartime Manhattan program and elsewhere in the government, the Sudoplatov's book exposed many unknown details of that era from the thirties to the fifties including the top Manhattan program scientists.

The Venona SecretsI had read the book by Herbert Hoover, “Freedom Betrayed” the book, “Witness.” by Whittaker Chambers, the book by Diana West, “American Betrayal,” the book by M. Stanton Evans, “Blacklisted By History,” the book by M. Stanton Evans and Herbert Raomerstein, “Stalin’s Secret Agents,” and the book by John Koster, “Operation Snow” so I had a good idea how the Communist had infiltrated the Roosevelt administration. More than one of these books that I had read referred to the Venona cables.Herbert Romerstein and Eric Breindel stated in the preface of this book that of particular interest to both of them was the Soviet attitude toward Jews. They wrote that they were not surprised that the NKVD, the Soviet foreign intelligence service, showed disdain for and made cynical use of the Jews willing to work for them. What surprised them was the Venona code name for Jews- “Rats.” They devote chapter 10 to this subject of Jews serving the Communist. The authors made it clear that Moscow’s agents in the United States helped prevent an earlier Nazi surrender to the Anglo-Americans; the prospect of which haunted the USSR throughout the war. How Assistant Secretary of the Treasury Harry Dexter White played an important role in the Soviet endeavor. White was what intelligence professionals call an “agent of influence.”He not only spied for the Soviet Union throughout the war but also sought to shape critical U.S. economic policies in obedience to the orders of his Moscow masters. As a spy, he was a rival in perfidy to Alger Hiss and to the trio of British traitors, Kim Philby, Guy Burgess, and Donald Maclean. The authors of this book go on to explain how “Operation Snow,” was executed by White and Soviet agents. One of White’s greatest contributions to the Soviet effort was his role in the Morgenthau Plan for postwar Germany. The Morgenthau Plan was to convert Germany into a pasture. This book explains how it was conceived and what effect it had on Germany, Jews and our military forces.White’s political star within the Roosevelt administration was never higher than in 1944. White was the chief American delegate at the historic conference in Britton Woods, New Hampshire, that plotted the postwar financial rules by which the Allies intended to restore their battered economies. Read this book to see how that turned out!On March 31, 1945 Secretary of State Edward Stettinius wrote to White, “On behalf of President Roosevelt and the members of the American delegation, it is my privilege to extend to you an invitation to become an official advisor to the delegation of the United states to the United Nations Conference on International Organization….” Less than a week later, a Moscow Venona message ordered Alhmerov to make arrangements with Silvermaster (Robert) about maintaining contact with White, then called (Richard), and another member of the Silvermaster ring, William Ludwig Ullman (Pilot) in San Francisco (Babylon).During White’s attendance at the San Francisco conference, he was handled by NKVD officer Vladimir Pravdin (Sergej), who served in New York but attended the conference as a Soviet news agency TASS, reporter. White gave the Soviets information of the American delegation’s internal discussions. White also reported that “Truman and Stettinius want to achieve the success of the conference at any price.”Alger Hiss, as agent of the GRU (Soviet Military Intelligence), was the acting secretary general at the founding conference of the UN. This provided the Soviets with the advanced notice on how the Americans would handle questions during the deliberations.President Harry Truman had appointed the Treasury official as executive director of the International Monetary Fund. J. Edgar Hoover wrote to Brigadier General Harry Vaughan, President Truman’s military aid, asking him to give the enclosed background on White to the president. Hoover described White as a valuable adjunct to an underground Soviet espionage organization operating in Washington D.C., also the Canadian government sources had expressed their concern to the FBI about the appointment of White. The Canadians knew of White through the Soviet military intelligence defector Igor Gouzenko. Harry Truman did nothing with these reports and White was appointed.Herbert and Eric go into great details of how the Soviet agents made an Apparat (was a full-time, professional functionary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union or the Soviet government apparat (аппарат, apparatus), someone who held any position of ...)Chapter 4 is a chapter that explains Whittaker Chamber’s Spy Ring, I think Chambers does a much better job if this in his book “Witness.”Chapter 5 details the Elizabeth Bentley Spy Ring, also the Silvermaster Ring, The Perlo Ring, and talks some about how Eleanor Roosevelt was targeted by the Soviets agents. The authors seem, to me, to be letting the Roosevelts off the hook, to their way of thinking, it is only because the Roosevelts are so naïve, that these spies were all over the White House. Why would Eleanor give the order to shut down the act of deciphering the Venona cables??? I’m glad her orders were not carried out.Chapter 6 and 7 lays out the details of the Atomic Espionage. Here I found what I was looking for when I ordered this book. I had read much about Harry Hopkins in Diana West’s book American Betrayal and wanted more sources concerning him as a spy. Since he, to me, was so important because of how close he was to the Roosevelts. Harry had lived in the White House, slept in the Lincoln bedroom for three years and six months. Harry had dined with the Roosevelt every night. In this chapter on page 212 I read, In the 1960s, Oleg Gordievssky, a KGB officer, attended a lecture by the veteran Chekist Iskhak Akhmerov, who, had been the” illegal” Rezident in the United States during the war. Akhmerov mentioned his contact with Alger Hiss, but “the man he described as the most important of all Soviet wartime agents in the United States” was Harry Hopkins. Direct evidence in Venona confirms Akhmerov’s statement of his connection with Hopkins. This explains why Hopkins was adamant about shipping uranium to the Soviet Union despite the objections of the military authorities. Another example was Hopkins promotion of his friends including Colonel Philip R. Faymonville, who had been military attaché in Moscow from 1933 to 1938. Faymonville’s colleagues considered him to be extremely pro-soviet, calling him the “Red-Colonel.” When Hopkins in 1941 suggested sending him back to Moscow to expedite Lend-Lease, army intelligence objected. Hopkins said only, “You might as well get his papers ready, because he’s going.” Hopkins arranged for Faymonville to be promoted to brigadier general and later to general. Long story short, Faymonville was set-up, he met a young man that became his lover but was also a Soviet NKVD agent.Later we learn about “Kvant” a mercenary spy, and Arthur Adams a Veteran Spy, Klaus Fuchs, a spy from Germany, The Rosenberg Case, other members of the Rosenberg Ring, Sarant and Barr Flee.Chapter 8 Atomic Espionage in California at the University of Berkeley, how the Soviets used Trade Unions, The J. Robert Oppenheimer Case,Chapter 9 How the Soviets targeted the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), VENONA reveals how easy the NKVD penetrated OSS, The French Connection.Chapter 10- see aboveChapter 11 The Jack Soble/Robert Soblen Ring, Zarubin’s Stern GangChapter 12- Polecats (Trotskyites) and Rats, (Jews), Stalin: Jews and Negroes Are Not Americans, Targeting Jewish Organizations, Duping Albert Einstein, The Murder of Erlich and Alter, Target: Jewish Telegraphic Agency, The International Workers Order and Espionage,Chapter 13 Target: Journalists, The recruitment of I.F. Stone, Target: Lippmann, Mission in Moscow,Chapter 14The new documentation available since 1991 has been broadly, in two categories-(1) the archives of the Communist International, which were kept in Moscow, and the files of other Communist parties in Eastern and Central Europe; and (2) the Venona papers, which were kept in Forte Meade, Maryland. But finally made public, the material from east and west combined shows that the U.S. Communist Party was extensively and fruitfully in Moscow’s espionage infrastructure in America. The Party’s personalities, including General Secretary Earl Browder, were active participants in recruiting and vetting Party members on behalf of Soviet intelligence. Indeed, most of the wartime Soviet agents in the United States were members of the communist Party. Through the Party, the USSR was able to draw prospective agents from a pool of ideologues loyal to Moscow, a circumstance unique in history. This reality, which was clear to U.S. government investigators and many others for decades but which was- and is- disputed by liberal historians, is now a known fact.Fact: There existed in important agencies of the U.S. government networks of American spies under the control of Soviet military intelligence and NKVD officers. These included individuals whose disloyalty has been acknowledged for years by almost all serious students of the subject, Alger Hiss, Harry Dexter White, and the Rosenbergs through the years have had a shrinking pool of defenders. Others, until the Venona documents were aired, were considered heroes of American liberalism.Fact: Venona has shown conclusively that the highest-level American government officials working for Soviet intelligence was Harry Hopkins, the close friend and advisor of President Roosevelt. His clandestine contact with “illegal” Soviet intelligence officer Iskhak Akhmerov,To whom he provided secret government information, alone makes the case against Hopkins. Only a Soviet agent would be permitted to know that an “illegal” intelligence officer such as Akhmerov was connected with the Soviet Union.Fact: Atomic scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer performed work on behalf of the Soviet Union. Although it has long been known that several of the scientists involved in the Manhattan Project believed the world would be safer if the secrets of the atomic energy were shared with the Soviet Union, it had been considered bad manners even to suggest that the sensitive Oppenheimer could possibly be so crude as to be a conscious collaborator with the Soviet secret police. But he was.Fact: The Left (Liberals) liked to use one of the right wing’s favorite complaints as evidence of its inanity-its belief that American journalists, including some of the best known, had been deliberately enlisted in the Soviet cause. The Venona documents leave no room for doubts that this was exactly the case, in particular regarding the loyalty of I.F. Stone to the Soviet Union and, in his case, to his book account.Fact: The Communist movement displayed systematic and consistent anti-Semitism.APPENDIX ATHE DOCUMENTS pages 461-505APPENDIX BTHE SPIES pages- 509-515Notes 517-564BIBLIOGRAPHYPages-565-574INDEX

The book documents the extensive penetration of America by Russian spies before, during and after WWII. It vindicates much of McCarthy's real or suspected analysis. It exposes the spies that sat is key posts of FDR's administration, including the partially successful use of Eleanor Roosevelt herself It debunks, forever, the "innocence" of the Rosenbergs who stole the US atomic bomb and handed it to the Russians. It details how FDR’s top-ranked Harry Hopkins (a Russian spy) expedited uranium shipment to Russia. It explains the reasons why Einstein was walled off from the atomic bomb development team. But Oppenheimer, a Communist along with his wife, remained on that team! Worst, it shows how riddled FDR’s entire war effort was with multiple Communist cells stealing our nation’s secrets. In numbing detail, it names names and traces the networks which were in operation during these times. What it lacks is a sense of the historic context as to what the Communists did with the information. There is no cohesive story arch to tie the events together, only a recitation of the people, places and messages. One yearns for that linkage, page after page.In the end, it becomes a reference work instead of a book which contextualizes the events and brings the larger trends of the momentous times into focus.

“If you, with your special facilities and training, do not manage to do this, it is not particularly likely that anyone else will do it." With this, Evelyn Underhill challenges us to invest deeply in our own spiritual lives, for our sake and for the sake of the people to whom we minister. She writes extensively on how prayer shapes ministers, different types of prayer and how this life of prayer overflows into the work of ministry. Though Concerning the Inner Life was written in 1926, Underhill’s insights remain deeply relevant to the complex work of spiritual direction.

Fabulous book

Excellent teaching for clergy and serious students of God.

Found this to be an enlightening book. The essays were helpful for my course study in the Spiritual Life of the Minister.

GREAT SELLER...BOOK JUST AS WAS DESCRIBED..

These three informal talks were given by Evelyn Underhill to an unspecified school for clergy in the North of England. It was published in 1926 at the request of some who heard the talks. The talks are (1) The heart of personal religion (2) The goals of inner life and (3) Contemplative and creative life. The author believes that the first duty of the parish priest is not social work but to be "real men of prayer." She offers encouragement and inspiration by quoting western Christian mystics in the practice of the interior life. The English is beautiful and the talks must be read in their entirety to receive the author's nuanced message. Can be read over and over again because it is written with style and grace.
