This is the first time I have taken a week to read a NR book; however, this book was so different. I could not just bang through it.The timing on this book was emotional. The book starts with a mass shooting in a mall. I read other reviews that said the book seemed preachy, I thought it was pretty realistic. It is a very slow moving romance, the couple does not even meet until the 50 percent part of the book.The book was thorough on developing the characters and how and why they turned out like they did. It was extremely well done. There were parts that made me uncomfortable and brought tears to my eyes. So kudos to the author.I am at the point with NR that I am only reading her single release in the spring and the JD Robb books. While these were very familiar personality characters, they stood on their own. I did not give it 5 stars, because while the story was very well done, this is not a book I would go back and re read. There was not a character I loved. I felt all characters just moved the storyline, I didn't connect like I thought I would. I ended up not caring for Simone, and the Chief, well he was okay, I just didn't see why he loved Simone. The romance didn't connect for me, maybe b/c I didn't like Simone. And it could be silly little things like, why does there always need to be some form of witchcraft or mystical junk in the book? It is a little too patterned and predictable that way for me to push it into 5 stars.I liked the town, I loved the place. The book was emotionally wrenching, I am glad I read it.

Wow. Terrifying and heartbreaking, and in true Nora R fashion, draws you in until the characters are right there beside you, smiling, crying, breathing. The romance took a bit to heat and discover, but that's actually okay. I loved how we saw each character develop, and what made them do as they did, and also into the people they were. It's actually BETTER the romance part waited, because neither was ready for it until then. Ms. R is fabulous with relationships, especially family ones, and here, I would say the family IS the romance, the love, if you will. From the 'traditional' family structure to the hero who made his own family, it all was so well done I wanted to be Sim or Essie's sister and especially CiCi's granddaughter!This is a story of rebuilding, moving on, and growing. Not just maturing but actually growing and of PTSD, something so rarely is spoken of and acknowledged. Each character fought his/her own demons and battles. Some won. Some didn't. But all changed from who he/she was at the start to who he/she was at the end. And that's the hope we all have, isn't it? To simply LIVE life the way it should be lived, even when bad things happen.While the villain is named almost from the start, the motives and things which shaped are so compelling you ALMOST want to reach out and try to help. In a world where this could all be tomorrow's headlines, it sends a powerful message of hope, rebuilding, and love in all its many forms. And that there are simply some people beyond help and truly 'soulless' who could live right next door. Well, well done. Ms. R.

I received a preview of the first chapter of this book several months ago a n immediately put it on preorder even though the release date was further in advance than I usually buy. But, hey, Nora Roberts. This book has a similar format as the Witness which I really liked, although I found the subplots in the witness much more entertaining. (I’ve never really found living in the mind of the killer very compelling, although Roberts manages it with her usual flair.)There is no real mystery here as we know the killer very early on. The suspense comes from catching the killer. Readers of the “In Death” series will very much enjoy this one.

This is my first truly unhappy review of Nora's books. I almost quit about 1/3 in and forced myself to keep reading, it had to get better. I kept waiting for Reed and Simone to connect and it didn't happen until halfway through. This is one I'll have to read again soon, but I will skip over the horrible time spent in the mind of the villain, the awful things she did and just read the good (IMHO) parts. Some may like delving into the psychopathic mind of a truly awful villain, but not I. Nora doesn't do it often, but it's not for me.

I spent the first 30 pages saying damn you Nora, because I was crying through the trauma of emotions conveyed. I would think she spent hours talking to victims to capture the the real feelings of surviving a mass shooting. Though this is a fictionalized story, I was glad to see an author with a international presence such as Nora Roberts bring it to the fore front. I did yearn for a political statement on it, but that's not Nora nor the point of the book. I can see others being upset that the events of this book evolve from a mass shooting. However, why not? The antagonist is not your typical suspense novel nutcase. Its not some make serial killer raping and maiming women and that is nice departure from that overused trope. The madness of the antagonist is explored as well, giving us why to all the killing.Overall I liked it and was not disappointed nor was reminded of other stories written by Nora

This was a great story and I had a hard time putting the book down. I cried during several different parts. The beginning was heartbreaking and so very timely with what is going on in our world today. I loved that as the book progressed through the years from the mass shooting we were able to see how the main characters grew and changed and how that tragedy affected their lives - whether it was their family dynamics or friendships or romantic relationships. The flip side of that was watching how the villain of the story progressed through the years - the additional tragedy that she caused and the coldness in the way she did it. That character was chilling and I will say that I had more than one nightmare the first night after I started reading the book. I enjoyed all the characters very much, but CiCi was my favorite. This book is definitely worth reading.

The issue is like a Sword of Damocles that hangs over civilization. It is very perplexing and disturbing that not only can we not even acknowledge it, we cannot begin to take steps to combat it.Hoffman's book makes clear that we are influenced by group values, and cultural identity can overpower scientific reasoning. We employ ideological filters influenced by group values and we generally endorse the position that most directly reinforces our connections with others in our referentgroup, which strengthens our definition of self. The book is a typical Social Scientists exploration of the different reasons why the general public, excluding scientists, either accept or reject the science or the factual information proving the degradation of our dear Planet Earth, mainly as a consequence of the human activities of burning fossil fuel over the last decades or century. The author seem to suggest that the vast institution and infrastructure that’s surrounding the fossil fuel industries – which is what drives the economy to a larger extent – must be completely changed, and resistance from vested interests should be expected. Although I agree with most of the points, if not all, that he made in the book but I will have to disagree with him here to an extent, because he seemed to suggest a complete overhaul of the industries which is a bit unrealistic I believe. A more inclusive process that galvanizes not just the general public but also the fossil fuel industries to accepting a well evaluated policy of reducing carbon emissions to a bearable minimum is what I believe will work and what I’ll suggest. It was a short, fascinating and an enlightening read over all, anyone who is interested in Climate Change Communication should find the book very useful.

I purchased this book to see if it would work as a resource in a class on human impact on/ of climate change I am teaching next fall. I am really glad I did! How Culture Shapes the Climate Change Debate explores the social and political dimensions of resistance to thinking about climate change, identity politics, and the importance of considering the words we use to discuss scientific topics in order to make them less threatening and more accessible to our audience. With examples that show parallels between public/ political climate change discussions and those on the ozone hole, smoking and cancer, and other sciencey social issues, and practical advice for communicating effectively about these issues, this book has a lot to offer anyone engaged in the discussion - maybe especially those of us who teach about it.

Hoffman's book is a breath of fresh air for those of us who are frustrated about the climate change debate. His insights provide a new perspective from which to view an old topic. Comparisons with the abolition of slavery and the link between cigarette smoking and cancer offer hopeful scenarios for massive culture change. Even his suggestions about how to discuss the topic at the dinner table were inspiring. Put this book on your must read list.

Easy and extremely informative reading. Get ready to rethink much of what you thought you knew, with the authors updated info. It's not easy to change long existing ways of thinking.Much respect to author for giving due respect to my struggle to get the public to pay more attention to safe cooking temps and use of quality digital thermometers. You would think with the price of meat, that the public would be more attentive investing in a quality thermometer, but sad reality is that many still do guess work. Much myth busting too, will likely have you a bit hesitant. I am in total agreement that buying a steak bone in, is a waste of money, with belief that it will be more flavorful. Agree that the extra taste is so minimal that you are wasting money paying what ever price per pound of meat, that includes the bone, and paying the meat price. I don't want to "give away" all the myth busters, just citing an example.If any hesitancy, try his tips and methods gradually and you will be convinced.

For years I have bought book after book to learn every secret I can about BBQ. Of all the books I've bought, this one is by far, leaps and bounds ahead of the rest. Honestly, you will find every trick you will find in the rest Righetti here in one book. The sauces, rubs, techniques and even methods not commonly thought of as the norm but are far better than what is commonly used. This book will take your BBQ skills right into the professional level . If you only buy one BBQ book in your life, this is the one hands down. I personally have over 1/2 a dozen various smokers & grills I cook outdoors more than indoors so trust me when I say, this is the finest publication on BBQ of all time.

I am an old BBQ cook, a certified BBQ Judge, and a reader of Meathead's columns. He is the expert in ALL the many types of BBQ's that exist and he reports not about emotion or promotion of a cooker but about it from a technical basis and you really do learn wonderful ways to do BBQ.Over my 30 some years of BBQ cooking, I have changed types and styles of cookers from plain to fancy pellet rigs and now back to the fantastic Pit Barrel Cooker using just old fashioned charcoal. There are very few cookers that can cook the quality and quantity of meat that a Pit Barrel can turn out and taste so spectacularly good.I own over 130 BBQ cook books and this one is the Bible and the ideas, suggestions and recipes are always dead on. Meathead has cooked them.You will enjoy this book and it will make a grand gift to a new BBQ fan. Remember, BBQ is America's gift to the culinary world.

Bought the book after finding Mr. Goldwyn's recipe for corning your own corned beef online. In his recipe, I noticed that his comments about nutrition and chemistry were spot on (I have at least the rudiments of a scientific education) rather than the collection of anecdotes and old wive's tales that seem to permeate much of the cookbook genre. While still involved in the brining of my first batch of homemade corned beef, I have read a good deal of his book, and decided that I definitely made the right decision to buy it. I'm still awaiting the results of Corned Beef a la Meathead, and may expand on my review depending on the result! For the present, my reading has convinced me that he knows, not only the recipes and tried and true mechanics of barbecuing (and brining/smoking), but the actual science behind the art. Since cooking is both an art and a science, I regard this, so far, as a classic of no mean proportions.I've now made three batches of corned beef (about ten pounds per batch) with his method, and have decided that I'll never buy corned beef in the package again. I followed his online recipe religiously and have never tasted better. All of the people I've shared my product with agree.

What a great book, from someone that has a fun style to share BBQ secrets.Since I started following Meathead's website, I have completely changed from Meat Waster to Grill Master!My Wife used to scold me when I brought home Thick porkchops because I would make a mess of them on the grill. Now thanks to learning about Reverse Sear and having a Good Thermometer, the family is buying the Thick Porkchops for me. Ha.I really can't say enough about this book, or Meathead. He has a fun teaching style, and if you pay attention you learn about cooking, not just recipes.Learning about the Myths and How to Do It Right are enough. But then you get invaluable advice on grills, tools, and how to use them. Bonus is the recipes that he has developed, along with rubs and sides.This would make a Fantastic Gift for anyone that has a grill...

This, and Franklin's book, will always have a place on my shelf.I own 3 smokers. A barrel wood/charcoal, an upright wood/charcoal and an electric. Where Franklin changed how I make Brisket, Meathead changed how I do many other things. Every year I pick out a new thing to grill/smoke and "perfect". This year I picked burgers (because honestly before I might as well have been making mini meatloafs and throwing them on buns because I'm really not that much of a burger buy). Following his advice and methods, I've made some darn good burgers this year already and am still working on getting everything just right. But there's so much more in this book, so many concepts, descriptions, and I particularly like how he plays mythbuster on so many things (for example, no real need to let meat rest before slicing, which is huge to me).Get this, and get better at what you cook, whatever it is.
