The Captain's Nephew (Alexander Clay), by Philip K. Allan

Review

"Philip K. Allan brings a fresh new voice to naval fiction under sail with his debut novel, The Captain's Nephew...a captivating entry in naval fiction, replete with true to life characters, well-drawn officers and striking Jack Tars. A sea breeze drifts off the pages, along with the reek ofpowder smoke." -- Quarterdeck Magazine "Allan wastes no time from the first page in getting me hooked...His verbiage from the start maximizes utility while still presenting as fluid and gorgeous, with such realism that we can virtually see the scene as it occurs. The Captain's Nephew--a seafaring adventure...told by a storyteller well-versed in his craft, it is a tale to re-visit time and again as we eagerly await the next." -- Before the Second SleepThe Captain's Nephew opens with a mesmerizing and vivid portrayal of a man drowning and then regresses six months to show the events that culminate in this tragic incident. From first page to last, Allan bewitches and transports readers back to 1796 to walk the decks of a wooden ship and engage the enemy all the while experiencing what the characters endure. Equally compelling is that this is not just a tale of the officers of the Royal Navy. Interludes are woven into the story to personalize and recreate life on the lower decks, as well as to provide glimpses of what it was like for loved ones left behind. This first book in the Alexander Clay series offers a satisfying resolution of who dies, while only hinting at how it happens - an intriguing and perfect enticement for readers who will eagerly await the next chapter in Clay's pursuit of his naval career and the woman he loves.Cindy Vallar, Editor & Reviewer The Captain's Nephew is one whirlwind of a ride, excellently detailed, andhad me clinging to every page. It's beautifully written with wonderful detailsthat will have the readers sitting on the edge of their seats until the veryend of the book.James Brewer - The Manhattan Book Review

About the Author

Philip K. Allan comes from Watford in the United Kingdom. He still lives in Hertfordshire with his wife and his two teenage daughters. He has spent most of his working life to date as a senior manager in the motor industry. It was only in the last few years that he has given that up to concentrate on his novels full time. He has an excellent knowledge of the 18th century navy, having studied it as part of his history degree at London University, which awoke a lifelong passion for the period. He is a member of the Society for Nautical Research and a keen sailor. He believes the period has unrivalled potential for a writer, stretching from the age of piracy via the voyages of Cook to the battles and campaigns of Nelson. From a creative point of view he finds it offers him a wonderful platform for his work. On the one hand there is the strange, claustrophobic wooden world of the period's ships; and on the other hand there is the boundless freedom to move those ships around the globe wherever the narrative takes them. All these possibilities are fully exploited in the Alexander Clay series of novels. His inspiration for the series was to build on the works of novelists like C.S. Forester and in particular Patrick O'Brian. His prose is heavily influenced by O'Brian's immersive style. He too uses meticulously researched period language and authentic nautical detail to draw the reader into a different world. But the Alexander Clay books also bring something fresh to the genre, with a cast of fully formed lower deck characters with their own back histories and plot lines in addition to the officers. Think Downton Abbey on a ship, with the lower deck as the below stairs servants.

When I was much younger, I read and loved the Hornblower novels by C.S. Forester. Over the years, I’ve tried other writers in the genre. (Including scifi writer David Weber’s Honor Harrington series - a reinvention of Hornblower in outer space.) I found many to enjoy: Andrew Wareham’s Duty and Destiny series, Dudley Pope’s Ramage novels, and Alexander Kent’s outstanding Bolitho adventures, to name some of the best. All this is to say, “Welcome, Philip K. Allan to my list of must reads!” This is an thoroughly enjoyable novel. It’s well written, with a wonderful cast of characters. There’s action, suspense, humor and an unresolved murder. If naval adventures are part of your reading list, you must try this one. I can’t wait for book 2, which I understand is called A Sloop of War. Congratulations! A wonderful debut.

I was happy to discover the Alexander Clay series. Overall I'd say the author has a solid effort of story telling here that is worthy of a read. You'll have to ignore several misuses of words and several misspellings. Don't let that stop you. I bought the other two books in the series at present and I hope better editing, or at least a read by someone else before publishing, has transpired with books 2 and 3. I would say Mr. Allan is well read on the British naval fiction of the era and I detected hints, just faint hints, of other stories I'm familiar with but that's true of nearly every book I read about British naval fiction of the era. It wasn't really distracting but it was certainly noticeable. Mr. Allan imparted a good story that was easy to read and follow, wasn't too technical about sailing square rigged ships and has well developing characters with believable conflicts and reasonable human reactions to those conflicts. For Mr. Allan, as you continue to write I would love to see your stories fleshed out a little more, particularly in the interactions between characters as they build animosity and alliances towards each other. As an example, the animus the captain has for the first lieutenant seemed to develop quite rapidly and then run both hot and cold. I'm sure there has to be a reason for that but it didn't feel well demonstrated in the story. I am encouraged enough with your story that I went ahead and bought books 2 and 3 because I love a good story and this one seems to have the makings of a good one. Please keep going with the series. I recommend The Captain's Nephew and think you'll find it a decent read. It is inexpensive entertainment so go ahead and take the plunge. Buy it.

For me in historical naval fiction Patrick O'Brian is the yardstick with which to compare other authors in the genre. O'Brian is simply he best. Many I have read, are okay but still average. I think mr Allen scored with this debut above average indeed. I like his style, the book is very well written. Nice dialogues, characters are well worked out and the story line is interesting. Mr Allan certainly knows his stuff when it is about the technicalities of handling a sailing ship of the age. So in short: a great book which I can recommend to lovers of historical naval fiction. I will start with the sequel shortly and - pleasant surpise - on mr Allan's website I read that number 3 is on its way, available this month.

This was a very nice discovery. For readers who have already exhausted the works of Patrick O’Brian and CS Forester, this is a very enjoyable historical fiction set in the age of sail. It mixes nautical adventure and well researched naval historical detail with a personal struggle within a stifling, rigid social hierarchy. The tone of narration is closer to Hornblower than Aubrey-Maturin, and it offers more depth to secondary characters than either of those series. It can’t match the dialogue between Aubrey and Maturin, but that does make it easier for readers to follow what is happening in the various maritime maneuvers.I’ll definitely be reading further in this series.

I have read literally hundreds of the Age if Sail genre, starting with O’Brien. I was tired of it. But this author has reawakened my interest. Yes, have heard much before but his storytelling is wonderful and I finished this book in a day. Looking forward to the next!

Great new series. Not overly burdened by time placement, Turns in an acceptable first go and I for one look forward to installment #2 and beyond. Likeable characters, somewhat predictable plot lines.

When nearing the end of most books that I read, I find myself anxious for an ending and to move on to something else. Not so with this one - I could have kept reading for much longer (and am doing so with the continuing series)!Excellent writing, and although a war novel, there really isn't that much in the way of battle scenes. It's much more concentrated on character development and relationships. Excellent!

Mr. Philip K. Allen has joined the ranks of Patrick O'brien, Alexander Kent and C.S. Forester as a premier writer of naval fiction. I really enjoyed this book and have ordered the other 2 in this series. As we say in the US Navy, bravo zulu, well done!

I bought this with some of the birthday gift cards I bought, if it just played my Prime music alone it would be worth it but I am finding new things to do with it nearly every day. Saves me time as I ask for the weather and news while getting dressed and get it hands free. Really enjoy that it reads Kindle books for me.

This guide helped me a lot navigate and use Amazon Echo efficiently. I also learned a lot about the device and its other uses. It was very concise, informative guide with all the details. It also has a question and answer portion like FAQs portion where you can refer to if you want to learn more about the device. The most impressive part is the addition of illustrations for instructions and guide to help users navigate the site better. Overall, it was an informative guide to help beginners like me.

This book is very educational and it will surely be a useful and helpful guide to echo users. Its easy to understand and has a detailed explanation of every topic lined up in it so that even a novice in this would find it easy to understand. It describes and answers questions on amazon echo sound system. Its detailed explanation will help figure out how to set up the echo. I must admit that i never really took ads about this seriously but this book has been really helpful and explanatory. It provides you with links for assistance. I'll make sure to go over the book again.

I love and trust Amazon products. I got a Kindle Fire when Amazon released it a few years back and now that it released a very unique gadget, Echo, I also purchased it. Using it was kind of tricky at first. I didn't know how to utilize all the Echo's features and so I decided to purchase this book. Good thing I did, because now I how to troubleshoot my Echo and know how to detect and pair it. I am excited to load music in my cloud and be able to pair it to my Echo. I also found out that I can use my Echo to play Rock, Paper, Scissors, and use it as a dice. I am at awe with what this can do!

Love this guide, i bought one a few weeks back and it was good, but i like this one a lot better. A lot of the basic information on how to use for beginners which make it easy when explaining to a 6-year-old. I just hand him my tablet and he can read from there. This book was on free promo so it was a steal already. But even for $2.99 i would have paid, if you are buying yourself an echo then i suggest you grab this book as well!

Amazon Echo device is easy to use and a multi purpose device. This guide will give us the overview about this product, what is the ultimate usage, how it works and many tips and strategies about Amazon Echo. This is so complete that beginners will surely understand easily. Amazon Echo is incredible but just like any other things, this device has limitations too. All of these are discussed completely here in this book so I would recommend to read everything here first. However, the book is well presented and surely everyone will enjoy this book as well as the product.

I want to own this amazing gadget. I can’t wait to experience its great convenience. I am not so techie that’s why I need a great guide to help me master its functions. I want to fully utilize its features. This book is a big help, it is so comprehensive and easy to understand. I like that the author included some tricks and tips for using Amazon echo, it is very beneficial in getting the most out of this device. It was a wise move that I read this book first because I appreciate the Amazon echo more and I am ready to use it without the worry of damaging the gadget.

This was a shorter book which is what I like when trying to learn the basics of something within a short period of time. I have an echo, and I love it. This book goes through the basics (and includes pictures, diagrams AND screenshots of the app itself!!), and also my favorite part is the "troubleshooting" section. There are times where things just don't work the way you want them to, and this troubleshooting your echo section will definitely help you solve the pressing issues of connectivity and getting Alexa to respond, etc. Great book that I would recommend every echo buyer to read!

Bip in a Book, by Marcel Marceau Bruce Goldstone

From Publishers Weekly

This ingenious square volume makes brilliant use of both the great mime's talents and the idea of the book as a physical object. Fans of Marceau will recognize one of his most famous pieces, "The Cage," taken to a new level here. The opening spreads feature a seemingly fathomless glossy black background on the left as, opposite, the inventive mime plays out his drama, photographed against a crisp white background. As Marceau approaches readers, he comes up against an invisible wall, which he indicates with hands outspread; in the next photos, he moves toward the right-hand edge of the page, eventually coming to a dead-end there as well. But here's where he expands on his work in "The Cage": he next begins to "climb" the edge of the page until he hits the "ceiling," or top edge of the page. Rothfeld's photos brilliantly create a cinematic effect: Marceau first loses his hat to gravity, then loses his own tenuous hold, falling (over several spreads) to the bottom of the page. This whole sequence leads to a cleverly imagined interplay with the mysterious blackness that has hitherto remained confined to the left of each spread. Marceau begins to get sucked into the darkness, saves himself, but loses his hat into the black vastness. Much playfulness prevails as Marceau finds a way to retrieve his chapeau. For the uninitiated, this thoughtfully conceived volume is an ideal introduction to the art of mime at its finest; for Marceau's followers, it is a must. All ages. 9/28/07 The Viewing was great(pgs 1-35)(not one word is spoke via intro or narration or clues) until Page 37 ,as Bip begins to lose part of his hand in a lean toward the darkness..until then the dark pages to the right have no meaning or relevance ...on Pg 39 Bip looses the top of his body inclusive of arms up to where his vest buttons begin and on Pg 41 we see all of Bip again , standing in the white page pushing(but not touching) from the dark page with both hands, Pg 43 he realizes he no longer has his hat and from then on the story continues and ends happily on Pg 64...Publishers Weekly(via Cahner Business Info Inc copyright 2001 on the amazon book review page was invaluable to me since I didn't quite understand what was happening on Pg 37. PublishersWeekly explained about him being "sucked into the darkness". Bip in A Book loses some of the entertainment valuable of skilled mime Marcel Marceau's Bip's "live animation".

SUPERB! I have ALWAYS been a fan of Mime, and especially of the INCOMPARABLE Marcel Marceau. Fascinating to see one artistic medium so adeptly captured using another artistic medium!!!

With the recent death of Marcel Marceau, the world once more lost an important component of its artistic body. For him, the end came but for us,the world became much more narrowly noisy.Marceau conferred the silence a similar and even major importance respect the word, due the imagination in every one of us was an invisible bridge that allowed him to convey us to a new universe where the vanished of the magic lantern and those times in which the silent cinema spelled to our grandparents.I had the chance to watch him four times in Caracas, and I still remember a clever utterance in occasion of a brief interview, in which he said these wise words:" The most touching moments of our existence, leave us without words. It's very difficult for a mime to lie, because for lying, the words are necessary."
