Wonderful book. Explanations are clear and examples are plenty and very insightful. The author's prose is somewhat spartan but very accessible and to the point. It is a book for studying and reading with a pen and pencil while working through the exercises as you stride along. One can definitely learn a lot about estimation from it: Cramer-Rao lower bound, minimum variance estimators, linear data model, least squares estimation, maximum likelihood, method of moments, MAP estimation, bayesian estimation and all. Later chapters DO build on top of previous ones, so it is NOT a book to read here and there or to use as a reference, unless you have already worked through it before. End of chapter problems do not come with solutions, but are very cleverly thought out to add more to what has been learned in the chapter. Plenty of examples throughout the book. Lots of back-references to examples in previous chapters and back-references to previous sections. Very much like a textbook, either for class or self study. In other words, the author has what it takes to write a good (text)book. Good no, wonderful. Thumbs up and five stars.

This is an excellent book for someone who needs to pick up the essentials of estimation theory in a hurry. I have never taken a course on statistical signal processing or information theory, and yet I was able to learn the subject just from reading this textbook to the point where I can do graduate level research in the area. Kay makes the text very readable so one can just follow along as if attending lectures, and he does a brilliant job of striking the right balance of theory and real-world examples so you can really understand the material. I did not have enough time to try many of the exercise problems, but the ones that I did try were excellent. I was however able to gain enough understanding through the text and examples to actually put it into practice in my own research, so that is definitely the sign of a great textbook.

I bought this book because I wanted an practical adjunct to accompany my study of linear modeling theory using Stapleton's "Linear Statistical Models." Stapleton's text is theoretical where results are explained. I had hoped Kay's book would provide some practical examples from engineering and technology. The problem was that Kay's book just states results. There is no development of the results from beginning theory with examples. Why should one make the assumptions he makes?But this is just my take. From perusing the other reviews of Kay's book, he produces what some other reader's want.

This book deserves this rate because it is simply the most didactical book about Estimation Theory that I have read.I liked everything, each chapter. The book is perfect for a graduate one-semester course on Estimation Theory and for every one who needs Estimation Theory.

As other reviewers state, the system can be extremely detailed, fine grained, and gritty. OR it can be streamlined for fast, cinematic, narrative play. Don't let anyone convince you otherwise. GURPS Basic Set: Characters presents all you need for creating interesting characters, including simple systems for magic and psionics. The Campaigns volume presents detailed (but all pretty much optional) rules for combat and plenty of good advice for campaign building. GURPS is also very well supported as a system, with ample supplements for a wide variety of genres. I'd give it 10 stars if I could. Great job, Steve Jackson Games!

I love GURPS. So much stuff. Rules for nearly any situation I could imagine and the tools to create my own when nothing else was applicable. Sounded perfect. And for the right GM it may be. For several years I've tried to make this the game that would replace D&D and similar D20 (and other single die) systems. Well, it did replace them. But I was left feeling like I'd forgotten something. I'd forgotten how to have fun. Don't misunderstand, GURPS is fun. Far more so than D&D could imagine. But I was buried under the weight of my own expectations as a GM. And running games for my college's RPG Club made the situation worse. I was trying to introduce new players to the game all while I was barely keeping it together.I've realized that the game I want to PLAY is GURPS, but it's not one I can GM effectively - at least, not to my own expectations (my players give me much positive feedback, so maybe I'm being silly). I'm going to try Fate Accelerated and see if that's a better fit as GM.Maybe I'll be able to _play_ GURPS someday. It's the system I wish I'd paid attention to 25 years ago. It's not for everyone and it takes a good GM to tune this engine - I'm just not that guy right now.If you like details and rules to handle most anything in any genre, this is your game - hands down.I'm trying simpler systems for when I GM, but I'm always hoping to find someone local that runs GURPS. If you're looking at GURPS for your main game, know that it's the most amazing (and potentially overwhelming) toolkit for tabletop gaming you could imagine. You've been warned.

I am incredibly excited to be learning the GURPS system. I know I'm getting into it close to a decade after the fourth edition toolkits were first published and two decades after GURPS' zenith in popularity, but for someone who likes to blend genres (medieval characters in a sci-fi setting, for instance, or cyberpunk/horror/espionage all blended into one) no other system seems to come close to addressing that need. My only concern is whether or not for edition wound up being as well supported as seems to have initially been promised: there is still no vehicle creation kit, no consolidated bestiary, and it looks like I'll be porting a lot of third edition material over to fourth edition rules myself â€¦ which may require picking up the third edition basic toolkits ouch â€¦ although the sheer wealth of such available material, third edition worldbooks etc., is impressive. I'm still getting my feet wet, but so far I have no regrets!

I started playing GURPS with my friends recently. As such I ordered my own set of the basic 4th Ed rules. I've only had them a few days, but am really happy with the quailty. This is a hardbound book with good quality and feel pages. I've thumbed through it presently and like the are and feel of the book. I'll try to post back in 2 months letting anyone know how it has held up for the near term. I'm expecting no issues.

This book details how to create a character for the GURPS (Generic Universal RolePlaying System) game system, but does not contain any rules on how to play the game itself. If you want the actual rules (minus the character creation part) you'll want to purchase the GURPS Basic Set Campaigns book, which this book references extensively.GURPS endeavors to give gamers the tools necessary to create literally ANY roleplaying experience imaginable. With only a few cartoonish exceptions, it feels as though Steve Jackson has succeeded with his game system.The GURPS system uses only three six-sided dice (d6's) for most of the rolls you will be making, and encourages you to make use only of the rules you feel comfortable in order to make your game as streamlined or intricate as desired.Character stats, rather than being randomized, are purchased with a point system, as are skills and attributes pertaining to your character. This actively replaces the leveling system familiar to most other RPG's, in that you don't have a level 15 Cleric, but rather a 1750 point character that has purchased traits that a cleric would have, with no penalty if he/she wanted to dabble in magery or barbarism as needed in the future.Attributes (advantages or disadvantages) range from the mundane (Honesty) to the fantastic (Unkillable) and many rely heavily on Game Master approval. When generating or upgrading a character, advantageous traits can be purchased for points and disadvantages will reward you extra points, so I imagine a lot of power gamers giving their characters a fear of the dark so that they can also be able to fly or something.Units in the game are given in real world terms, and so combat "rounds" actually last one second each, and moving distance is given in yards. The game is also set up so that most of the calculation is done during character creation, and so everything is spelled out on your character record ahead of time.All in all, it's a very well thought out gaming system. I can't wait to try making a Flatworld-themed campaign using it!

A person using a Microsoft PC for the first time can face a formidable amount of documentation. Microsoft has produced heavy tomes, delineating all that is possible with its system. Her problem is worsened if the computer is for her home. Then there is no corporate IT staff to pester. But the prospects of reading several large volumes is daunting.So Holzman has given her an alternative. His book is directed squarely at the new user. It covers both looking after the software and hardware. In the latter, to give you an idea of the level of expertise he is pitching to, he explains that "the motherboard is the largest circuit board in the PC". An experienced user may snigger, but there are millions of people out there (perhaps you?) for which this is new and nonobvious.As for software, he has chosen an order of presentation which is a symptom of what Microsoft dreads. Holzman starts by describing how to connect to the Internet and then he discusses the browser, email and a firewall. Only after these does he go into outlining how to use the Microsoft operating system. Because what drives much uptake of computers these days is the web, as contrasted to a purely local interaction. Not that he is anti-Microsoft, but he is predicting that many readers have precisely these priorities for their computer usages.

Don't let the cover fool you. This is a must-have book for the person who needs to use a computer and the Internet as tools, but feels uneasy or confused about how to do so safely and has little or no computer background.It is not as much for those who want to become "do-it-yourself computer gurus" and work on their computers as it is for those who want their computer and Internet connection to work reliably for them. Virtually no technical jargon is used and generally when a computer term is used it is clearly defined or explained.The title also seems too restrictive. The book covers Internet issues as well as PC issues. "The Healthy PC" is an invaluable reference for both the computer and the Internet, but it is written in such a way as to be worth reading from start to finish as well.In addition to explanations, definitions, helpful tips and background information, step by step instructions are provided which are fully illustrated with pictures of what the screen will look like at each step of each procedure.Among the topics covered are ways to maintain and upgrade the computer, optimize performance and reliability of the PC and Internet connection, Internet issues (including safety, security and privacy), and much more.The author suggests what to do when dealing with threats and annoyances such as viruses, hoaxes, worms, spam, and spyware in addition to e-mail software and firewalls.We all know that if you look hard enough everything will have its positives and negatives. If I had to nitpick to find a negative, all I could come up with is timeliness, which is out of the author's control when dealing with publciction deadlines.Reality, especially in the computer industry, changes fast enough that between the time a book is written and the time it is released, some information may become obsolete.One example is a note on page 80 that states: "There is no alternative method to check your (AOL) email other than using the software provided by AOL or by visiting [...] As of the writing of this book it is not and has not been, possible to configure any dedicated email program...to work with AOL." That was true until recently when at least two dedicated email programs were released that can handle AOL mail as well as conventional email. Also the author uses AOL 8 rather than AOL 9 when referring to AOL.Please understand that what was true yesterday may not be true today and what is true today may not be true tomorrow. All any author can do is describe a snapshot in time. The only thing that we know for sure is that everything will change. Possibly the publisher should consider annual updates on either a separate release or subscription basis for books such as this, which provide important information in a rapidly changing environment.Carey Holzman has done a great job in providing tips, procedures, definitions, explanations, background and peace of mind to a much larger audience than is described on the cover.

The step-by-step instructions and screen shots were highly appreciated.I learnt how to reduce my electricity bill, maintain a healthier PC, and help the environment through using Windows Power Settings for Desktop Computers.I once worked as a network administrator at a primary school and as a computer technician. I had to work with over 50 computers, and I have always debated whether or not to turn the computers off over night. This book provides the reasons why you should turn your computer off over night, by providing advice about the computer fans which is very understandable.Information about windows scheduling (also known as scheduled tasks) was useful for me. I learnt how to turn my computer into an alarm clock using windows scheduling. While this book wont tell you how to turn your computer into an alarm clock, it does show you how to use windows scheduling.Given the increase of spam, spy ware, and constant security holes in operating systems - it's essential to have a copy of this book. You'll learn how to solve your problems, and most importantly, prevent them before they occur. Very good, very interesting. If you don't already know, this is based on a true story.

Great book! I love all of the pictures in the book.

My 4th grade daughter begged me for this book. Weâ€™ll probably end up buying the whole series.

The story of the young girl's remarkable survival is diluted by the constant breaks to discuss other people who were lost, or in one case, one's rather petty complaints about the flies. The author had already made the point of the problem of mosquitoes and flies in the story line. Why do we need to break from the story to hear a naturalist complain? This happens constantly throughout the book and the story is lost. I started skipping them and finding where the story picks up again.Also not sure we need the treatise on the history of the region. It is common knowledge and seems more a lecture than adding anything to the story.I was disappointed to find the author wrote this book without speaking with the subject. I know legally he is not required to do so, yet one has to wonder how much he got right.

Arrived on time, excellent!

Na'meir is foul for what he's doing to her and Meek. Hope Brooklyn don't end up pregnant. There were too many mistakes for me to give the book 5 stars.

Robert Grenier has done a great service by publishing his account of the first phase of the Afghan War. Until now, the narrative of this period has been dominated by the actions of the Northern Alliance, and the policy debates in Washington. However, the CIA Station in Islamabad (which Grenier led as Chief at the time of the 9/11 attacks) has long served as the front line for American efforts against al Qaeda. As such, Grenier played a central role in crafting the initial US response to the attacks.Grenier's prose is smooth and incisive, and presents a surprising level of detail given the sensitivity of his role. As a personal account, the story is undoubtedly biased, though this adds a color to the work which improves rather than detracts from the story. Grenier is up front about his own failings as well, which helps avoid any hint that he might be writing this solely to burnish his own part in the making of history.Cannot recommend this highly enough.

This book sets the record straight as to events on the ground in Pakistan and Afghanistan in the days after the 9/11 attacks, including Mr. Grenier's role as the architect of the fall of Kandahar and final military defeat of the Taliban at the hands of U.S. forces and their Afghan tribal partners. In the absence of any semblance of a plan by either the military or CIA's Counterterrorism Center (CTC), it was Grenier's plan to lash up U.S. military and intelligence personnel with Afghan tribal leaders such as Karzai and Shirzai -- a plan that Grenier's own CIA headquarters and CTC vehemently opposed and tried every way it could to thwart. But with CIA Director Tenet's approval, Grenier and his team in Pakistan and Afghanistan forged ahead with the plan, with tremendous success, ultimately bringing about the defeat of the Taliban and end of the war. Charlatans such as CTC's Hank Crumpton have attempted to steal that valor from those who were actually on the ground at the time, but this volume puts fabrications such as his to rest once and for all.

Mr Grenier delivers a lot of background to our early involvement in Afghanistan and Iraq with a clear, conversational technique. Although my impression of the Pakistan ISI remains skeptical, Mr Grenier was there and his reportage does much to show that Pakistan was a better ally than I had previously thought. It gave a much clearer picture of the role of human intelligence in dealing with difficult circumstances in this part of the world. Also there is more information than one might want to know about internal CIA politics, and dealings with Administration officials. Suspicions are confirmed regarding the ways that intelligence analysis can be twisted by the customer to support positions already taken. This should be a "must read" for anyone involved in various aspects of intelligence collection and analysis.

The author was the CIA station chief in Islamabad around 9/11, and later rose to be the head of the CIA Counter-Terrorism Center. Grenier provides a view of the process by which senior professionals contribute to the formulation of policy within the US government bureaucracy, with the all the cultural stresses and challenges that process entails. I found myself sympathizing with his efforts and (mostly) with his views, and admiring his success in influencing policy in a generally beneficial direction, at least as he tells it. I came away with the sense that the US, and perhaps the world, is fortunate to have people like Grenier serving it.

Frankly I was disappointed in this book! I expected a nice coffee table type book for the price ($50.00 dollars.....used) not this small thing!' My friends had just returned from the area and their amateur photos were as good as or better than those in the book!
