From his roots as a young Marxist economist to renowned libertarian thinker, Sowell comes full circle with this work. Having seen Marx from both sides and with a broad perspective, Sowell describes not only the concepts essential to Marxist economics but also an illuminating biographical outline of Karl Marx. The book takes head on the often misunderstood ideas and lexicon behind Marxist economics, laying out the ideology's essential ideas and giving the reader a working understanding of it's basic elements. But while it is most helpful, it is nonetheless a dense work despite it's brevity (281 pages) and some segments require rereading. If the nuts and bolts tend to baffle you, this one might be a bit much. The reader need not be an economics major, but bear in mind that this is hardly a casual read.

Even though this book was written almost 30 years ago, there is a lot of relevancy to today's political climate. After reading this book you will see where President Obama got much of the guidance for where he is trying to take America. This is frightening.I'll give you some excerpts from the book which should reveal the overall flavor of Marxism as studied by Thomas Sowell:The Marxist constituency has remained as narrow as the conception behind it. The Communist Manifesto, written by two bright and articulate young men without responsibility even for their own livelihoods -- much less for the social consequences of their vision -- has had a special appeal for successive generations of the same kinds of people. Intellectuals enjoy a similar insulation from the consequences of being wrong, in a way that no businessman, military leader, engineer or even athletic coach can.

Sowell is my favorite contemporary economist, and a great writer. Not all economists are great writers, look at Hayek, although to be fair Hayek's first language was German ANYWAY I wanted a book that simply told me what Marx and his economics and philosophy were all about, without adding modern interpretations into it. And this book does exactly that. It is a bit difficult to follow at times, obviously the more you know about classical economics (the economics Marx used as a springboard for his own analysis) and philosophy the better. The book fills in some detail on the philosophical background that Marx and Engels grew up in, but leaves out some of the important economic details. This is a book for those with a grounding in economics, especially those who know how classical economics differs from modern economics (Sowell's "On Classical Economics" or "Classical Economics Reconsidered" would make a great companion book to this). If there is a weak spot to the book, it is the chapter on the Marxian concept of value, possibly the longest in the book, and on the most complex and difficult to understand topic. I still don't have a perfect grasp of it, but this is because Sowell is attempting to distill a massive three-volume epic into one 300-page book.Until the final chapter, you'd have no idea where to place the author on the political or economic spectrum. It is simply an objective interpretation of Marx up until that point, and the only "sermonizing" is when Sowell goes out of his way to explain more modern (and corrupt) interpretations of Marxism which are not supported by the writings of Marx/Engels. The last chapter, on the legacy of Marx, adds some critiques from an economic, historical, and even moral standpoint, although Sowell makes it clear that what happened in the USSR, China, Cuba, etc., is not what Marx planned (Marx did not support revolutionary groups overthrowing governments, rather he believed that communism would *emerge* after certain conditions had been met).I'd like to see a larger critique of Marxian economics, philosophy, and history, but that's not what I wanted from this book. I'd like to see Sowell write a book where he puts his usual Hayekian analysis on things, explaining why Marxism, Leninism, etc., don't work in practice and how they clash with contemporary economics. You could say that to some extent, he did that in Basic Economics, but it was far from being the main thrust of that book.

... don't try to read Marx. His writing is all but impenetrable.Sowell is well known for making the complex understandable. And Marx is exceedingly complex. So much so that it takes quite a while to get through even Sowell's lucid explanation here. The intense weirdness of all things Marxian begin to become clear to the reader as Sowell first takes you through Marx' philosophy. Once you understand Marx' thinking, it becomes easier to understand where and how he got his economic ideas. The tone is even and professorial throughout the book. There is no attempt to persuade the reader toward or away from Marxism; Sowell simply explains it. However, no objective reader will come away convinced that Marx was right about anything! If you believe that knowing one's enemy is essential to defeating him, this book is required reading.

I actually read the whole book. It's quite dry compared to Dr. Sowell's other writings. It's a great survey of a vast topic. It only deals with the Karl and Freddy. He doesn't go into Cultural Marxism or Political Correctness. It's a lot like one of the those Oxford Short Introduction books, but much longer and written by someone you can trust. If you want more arrows in your quiver to fling at the left, this isn't the best place to look. If you want a basic understanding of Marx, his philosophy and economic theory, this is a great place to start. There is not much Sowell snark in this book. It's academic in its tone. He does make some excellent criticisms of Karl Marx as a human being in this book.

Gregory writes very well, and I enjoyed most aspects of her treatment of Margaret Beaufort. Still, the one overarching theme throughout the book is Margaret's overweening ambition coupled to her complete lack of self-awareness. If only we hadn't known this about her from the first pages, it would have kept me more engaged. Instead, there is never any doubt that Margaret sees herself as a perfect candidate for, if not sainthood, then for every honor that one human being can receive. She constantly wonders why others, so much less deserving than herself, keep receiving the things which she sees hers. Why are these things rightfully hers? Why, because she is God's most devout and devoted servant. Ergo, she alone deserves riches, respect and to be honored by others. All of her introspection, if such it can be called, is directed towards asking god to redress her endless grievances. This gets tiresome, hitting us as it does from the very first page. We get it, Margaret feels entitled.Still, her endless and mostly fruitless plots and schemes make an entertaining read, especially within the context of The White Queen, which should definitely be read before this volume. Her last two marriages are also well-explored by the author, and her feelings towards and interactions with first the cautious but honorable Henry Stafford and cautious but scheming Thomas Stanley were enough to keep me reading. Ultimately, and despite the protagonist's lack of introspection, I found it an enjoyable read.

The Red Queen is the a biography of a bad guy, and it's AWESOME!!Margaret Beaufort is this notorious/ infamous brutal & cold hearted women of English History, but how does someone get that way? Philippa Gregory lays down the foundation of how this woman came to be in this book, and who also becomes a prominent figure in multiple books after. As an influential figure in The Cousins War, she's never been one of my favorites; but I love this book for leveling me with who Margaret Beaufort is as a person and showing me why she is who she is. Philippa Gregory told the story of Margaret Beaufort in a way that evoked some emotions in me- she made me laugh, she made sad, she made me think, she humbled me, and she frustrated the heck out of me...and I loved every second!

This was a very interesting read. Lady Margaret is not a sympathetic character in my mind. It is true that women in this time period were little more than chattel, but she doesn't seem to know it. She doesn't appreciate her second husband, the only one who cares for her. When her third husband calls her out for her ambission, she is shocked. Her faith is not in God, but in her own greed and jealousy of the Yorks. It was fascinating to see how far she would go to put herself in a position of royalty. I didn't like her character, but I enjoyed filling in the history, even if it was fictional.

A bit easier for me to read than the first, The White Queen. The plot wasn’t as filled with conflict. And thank goodness for that! I had to put the first down to take a bit of a breather but this one I flew through!I was on the fence about this Queen, however. At first I was thinking I would like her more than Queen Elizabeth but as the story moved forward I became more confused with her motivation. Well, not her motivation, because that was always to put her son on the throne. But to the God aspect of her motivation. I feel like later on she was blaming everyone except herself for all the horrors in the world and she really should have been looking in the mirror instead of casting stones. She believed so fervently that God was backing her and her family that she would literally do anything that made that so!Even with that though, I really enjoyed how this one ended. There were questions that I had about the ending of the first and this one filled those in. There are still questions of course but I feel as if the next book in line, which is about The White Queen’s mother, does not sound as interesting to me as The White Princess which is #5 in this series! I just can’t wait that long!!

It's a rare story that gets told in the first person when that person is unlikeable and completely lacking in self-awareness. Lady Margaret sees herself in the mold of Joan of Arc, while we see her as unpleasant, wildly ambitious (for her son) and constantly scheming. That could make for an interesting contrast if the dichotomy between thought and action was slowly unveiled, but we're looking down our noses at Lady M in the first few pages after she announces she has "saints' knees".We learn little of her son, who is offstage for almost the entire book. Consequently when he does become king (I'm not giving anything away -- it's history!) there's no sense of joy or triumph. It's just another machination in a book that's full of 'em.So why four stars? Gregory writes extremely well. Two of Margaret's three husbands are fairly interesting. The endless plotting has its fascinations. And you get a good sense of what life was like for aspirants to the throne in the England of Richard III.

I was really pleased with Reilly's effort here. After initially hearing the author shilling the book on Jim Rome back when it was first released on hardcover, I never had much of an inclination to read it. I've found the bits of Reilly's work that I've read in SI often too sentimental and too snarky. In the meantime I have picked up a fairly serious interest in golf, and when I stumbled across the book again, I thought I would pick it up. "Who's Your Caddy?" won me over and proved that I had been haboring a number of misconceptions.First, you needn't be a golfer to enjoy the work. There are some moments where Reilly sinks into golf-speak of the kind that I think every weekend player grows tired of by about the second tee when you're out playing with that clown from work or the brother-in-law who's sporting a [...] putter, [...] irons, and a $1 million ego because he's a 4 handicapper. But, the book mostly takes a trip around the course that is accessible to golf novices. Especially when Reilly joins amateurs like Donald Trump (I've always wanted to find a way to plausibly refer to Trump as an amaetur) and Deepak Chopra for a round, the story moves quickly and humorously.Reilly even convinced me that he isn't the guy I would have thought he had to be after reading his SI work. Like the [...], naked under his raincoat, Reilly can't seem to help himself from unleashing overweight sarcastic sidebars. These inhibit the best parts of the story, but with a self-depricating twist that ususally leaves him as his own target, these diversions actually contained some redeeming moments. Finally, he does descend into melodrama (the typical golf schlock type stuff, i.e. golf is the great game that challenges your will and quickens your mind and personifies American freedom), but only very rarely, and that restraint rescues the book from what might have become the nonfiction take on Bagger Vance.Other reviews are right on target, this is not the kind of Updike, Heinz, etc. sports writing that actually captures the humanity and value of sports on paper - its silliness. But, on a summer afternoon when you'd rather save the $250 in greens fees and lost balls, this book should do the trick.

First and foremost, this book is funny! As many other reviewers have mentioned, Reilly is a hilarious writer, and this book is great for relaxation or entertainment. Each chapter basically contains an account of the author's experiences caddying for various famous people. Of course, a considerable number are professional golfers (both male and female), but quite a few are famous for other crafts and instead play golf recreationally. What I found most interesting about this book is the insight he provides in the inner world of golf. We find out information about the professional tours that you really can't pick up from the television or newspaper. This book gives you an idea of what it's like to actually be around professional golfers and the world they live in. The conceit of being a caddy is used to great effect since the caddy is the closest person to a player when he or she is on the course. Most golfers would thoroughly enjoy this book, but Reilly writes in an approachable and eminently readable fashion, so it's likely a great many non-golfers would find this book a fun read. If you have even a passing interest in the world of golf, get this book!

I'm not a golfer, I bought this for my husband who is. However we did have this lying around one day so I picked it up and started reading. I really enjoyed the chapters for people that I recognized but I'm sure I lost some of the inside jokes had I known who some of the other people were. All in all though I found it a good read the whole way through.

On the day when Tom Watson lost the Brittish Open in extra holes and a weekend when Tiger missed his second cut of his career - it is obvious to all that golf is not fair. Thus, this peek into the lives of professional golfers is fascinating. Golf is hard, very hard - and we know caddying is hard too - just not as hard - but this revealing book shows how tough it can be and how rewarding. Some of it reads like Greek tragedy - just shake that guy and tell him to stop that and do it THIS WAY...some is typical - ok billionaire guy, so your girl friend has real [...]...All in all it is a rare and sort of uncensored look into the real world of golf - a great read for those rainy days when you cannot get a tee time.

Not a fan of golf really but I found this book to be very interesting and funny. If you have someone in your life who is a golf fan - get this for them - it's a good read.

Rick Reilly is a talented humorist and that shows through in his profiles of various golfers who he got to know by carrying their golf bags. If you are looking for a pleasant diversion (and not after great insights into the human condition), this book is for you.

I love Rick Reilly's crisp writing, sense of humor, use of analogies, and great stories. All are found in this book!!

Gave it as a retirement gift so far no complaints........
