Poetry is personal and what feels close to home for one may not always be entirely relatable for another, but in that, lies greater meaning. I had not heard of Gareth Egan until I happened to stumble across his work on Instagram and decided to purchase "The Chaos In-Between" as I was moved and intrigued by his thoughts, the depth in his work, and perhaps the beautiful chaos in this author's enigmatic and ridiculously brilliant mind. Suffice to say, I'm glad I bought the book. I love it in fact. Egan speaks of his thoughts on life, learning and living, and of love. At times he seems conflicted --as in the beautiful chaos of what his mind "thinks" and that which his heart feels. He speaks of wanting to be understood and found by love that's of the highest and profound level... yet as you read the words he captures so eloquently, he hides his seemingly gorgeous soul within his own shadows. A condition that many of us experience without fully appreciating why we give up our own power. His words are raw, real, and genuine from the heart. Writing about love, loss, passion, risks, setting our own direction, and the need to quiet inner demons that hold us back from reaching our highest potential are not easy topics to talk about let alone write poetically about. Yet, Gareth Egan does both. He is a masterful author and doesn't hold back when he expresses his inner conflict he feels within. It's the raw beauty of his words that make one step back and realize... love is different for all of us and so non-linear. And perhaps we can only fully experience the power of love once we break ourselves down and build up again... and start living. I highly recommend The Chaos In-Between... even for those who do not regularly "follow" poetry reads -- as it is rich in depth and takes your mind and heart to places worth traveling to. In addition to the meaningful content, the book itself is beautiful with its cover and beautiful thick black pages. LOVE LOVE LOVE.
Great read
I've always been a fan of poetry and prose, but Gareth Egan is by far my favorite. This book found me when I had no clue I NEEDED it. I have dealt with death, loss, grief, heartbreak and many attempts to find truths and joys for the past ten years. So much of that is in this book. Reading his work feels like home, like sinking into a hot bath after the worst day/decade.I appreciate Egan's brutal honesty, his willingness to point out his own darkness and selfishness, the ugly parts of being human. His view of how we all fit into the universe makes me feel small at times. But then he writes the most personal, heart wrenching, relatable words about romance or the worth of a person that actually makes me feel important as the reader. Most importantly, I love the sensual side of his poetry. Sex can be a taboo subject and it definitely has been for me at many points in my life. I am awestruck by Egan's ability to capture what the innermost part of me wishes to express. As I've explored my own sexuality, I've learned that "sapiosensual/sapiosexual" is what I identify with the most. So this book is the best mindfuck you can get, in my humble opinion. Buy it, read it, fall in love with it. I would give it more stars if I could. My only complaint is that I couldn't order it in hardback, which is just fine because the paperback is gorgeous and has a great texture.
