This book is phenomenal! Not only intended for professionals, but also an excellent resource for those looking to further their understanding of how these amazing musical boxes function. The book covers a complete range of restoration techniques needed for these machines, and provides very clear instruction on how to best approach them. Although some of the more difficult repairs should still be performed by a professional in the field, many of the simpler repairs could easily be performed by someone with average skill sets. This is by far the most complete, and quite possibly the best, resource available on this subject.
Ord-Hume is one of the most widely recognized experts in the mechanical music and antique clock arena, having written many books. This is a good introduction for those who know little, and very detailed for those who know a lot, but without solid machine shop skills (and a fully equipped machine shop), you will be learning mostly theory. However, I'm one who likes to know how it works, so this book added to my knowledge base, even if I am unable to perform many of the repairs listed (like replacement of comb teeth--do NOT try this at home!). Another good book for the library of any devoted collector. Lots of diagrams and black and white only photos. Reading this might save you from accidentally damaging a priceless antique!
