I had to buy this for a college class. It was engaging and covered the basic points needed for investigative interviewing. Great for a beginner or someone who wants to review the foundations of the field.
The book was less detailed for an internal HR / non criminal lawsuit investigation than it seemed it would be.
If you are in the early stages of your investigative career than this is the book to get you started. If you're an old pro than this is a wonderful refresher and handy to have as a guide. Kudos to Inge Black for keeping Charles Yeschke's name on the book. He was well known in the business and respected throughout the security industry among many others. As a security professional I strongly recommend this book!
How do you say effectively I like this book. It's not just for beginners but for senior veterans as well. We all need a refresher. Pat Clawson stated in his Prefacein this book "I have learned repeatly throughout my career that every investigation is only as good as the information it gathers. Interviewing is a form of communication and evidence gathering." I have to highlight Chap. 13 which is titled "Investigative Interviewing: One Hundred Things You Should Know" These 100 point in my opinion sum up the The Art of Investigative Interviewing. Trust me Interviewing is an art. I had a close friend who told me about the guy who managed his garage and the auditors told him thousands of dollars has been stolen. He brought in the manager, who denied everything. He then totallydiscarded everything on his desk, to the floor and said You SOB your either going to jail right now OR your going to return every nickel you stole. He confessed and returned the money. His style worked, all of us have war stories. Interviewing is an ART.
