About the Author

Claire Stewart is Assistant Professor of Hospitality Management at CUNY at NYC College of Technology, City University of New York. She was executive chef at the Continental Club in New York City and executive sous chef at the Yale Club of New York City. She worked as chef tournant at Gee's Brassiere in Oxford, England and chef poissonier at Rainbow Room. Stewart was banquet chef at Highlawn Pavilion and a chef at Gracie Mansion in New York City. In her native California she worked as chef tournant at Delta King in Sacramento, and a chef garde manger at the Hyatt Regency. In addition to being chef owner of C to C Caterers, she worked as a server at Capriccio, and at Koya's, both in Rancho Cordova, California. Chef Stewart has been the resident beekeeper for the Durand-Hedden Historical House in Maplewood, NJ.

A wonderful encyclopedia of food and feasts. As Long as We Both Shall Eat traces our ever-evolving tastes in what to enjoy how and when. Not surprisingly, among the leitmotifs: money (the ways of the rich) and sex. We find the Marquis de Sade using truffles to “soften up” his victims, and female pigs finding the fungus because their odor recalls male pigs’ sex pheromones. And the chapter on wedding cakes begins by noting how linked they are to symbols of fertility. Stewart has read a lot and covers a tremendous amount of ground, but in small bites—most of the entries are just a paragraph or two. Recommended to foodies of all stripes and as a gift to prospective brides and grooms eager to learn more about wedding rituals.

So many interesting nuggets of history, that flows smoothly and steadily throughout the book. I admit, I was truly pleasantly surprised.
