Why the 1/2-star rating for this timeless and influential classic by one of 19th-c. America's most important journalists?5 stars for this classic text -- which I've loved since I first read it in the 9th grade, as one of the texts required by my American History teacher. (Now a history teacher myself, I often share it with my students, who uniformly love it.)1/2 star for the fact that this edition of the book is a 'legal bootleg'. That is, an unnamed, mystery 'editor' has taken a book that has slipped into the public domain because the author died before 1927 (Bly died in 1922 and thus just missed the 1927 copyright cut-off); re-packaged it as an 'edited' and 'revised' edition (why isn't the editor named? why aren't the 'revisions and updates' annotated within the text, per the standard for edited histories?); and re-published it under the 'Create Space' imprimatur to enrich himself/herself without sharing a dime with Bly's estate or original publisher. (Ian L. Munro's publishing house produced the book in 1887.)This is so uncool to me as a historian, history teacher, and Nellie Bly super-fan that I have no problem undercutting the profits of the aforementioned 'legal bootlegger' by sharing the following information with anyone who is interested:(1) You can save your dough and read an estate-sanctioned, totally free, e-Book version of Bly's _Ten Days in a Madhouse_ at the University of Pennsylvania's Digital Library website. Cut and paste the last 14 words of the previous sentence into your favorite search engine (I use the one that rhymes with Droogle or the one that rhymes with Tuck Tuck Moe) and the website will show up as one of the top search results.(2) Alternatively, if you'd like to listen to an estate-sanctioned, audio book version of Bly's work, then swap out the reference to the University of Pennsylvania's Digital Library and add the words "Internet Archive." The non-profit Internet Archive's really cool audio book version will pop up as one of your top search results. (Still more awesome, the Internet Archive offers the option of either listening online or downloading in any one of several different formats so you can listen via your device while on the go.)As the quintessential Progressive Era "Muckraker" -- which you'll recall from high school was the late-19th- and early-20th-c. term for the cadre of reform-minded investigative journalists that Bly exemplified -- Bly's track record indicates that if she were looking down from Journalist Heaven, she wouldn't object if you passed up a 'legal bootleg' of her work and instead checked out one of the aforementioned, free, estate-sanctioned, non-profit-archive-hosted versions. Indeed, I daresay that the brave, talented, fair-minded Bly would stand up and cheer.Just my $00.02; YMMV.

After reading all the great reviews on this book I was excited to be getting a copy and eagerly waited with intense anticipation, just to be extremely disappointed. I was left feeling like a major part of the book was missing. There were no illustrations just a reference to sketches at the end of the article. Very little was mentioned about the experiences while inside the Asylum. Everyone else must have read a different issue or something. I do NOT recommend buying this particular issue - ISBN# is in photos, as well as pic of the book cover and the "notation" about sketches. The are 52 pages/104 front and back so it doesn't appear to have pages missing, just content.

There are a number of publishers offering this book.In any of the publications, readers will find the main story of how journalist Elizabeth Cochran Seaman (pen name Nellie Bly) posed as an insane person in order to gain entry into Bellevue hospital on Blackwell's Island. This is a revealing look not only into how people were institutionalized 130 years ago, but also the lack of knowledge of medical doctors at that time. The book also includes two short articles on employment agencies and women working in paper box factories. What makes this publication different than others? There are hand drawn illustrations throughout other publications depicting Ms. Seaman at various stages of her investigations. The backs of those books feature pictures of Ms. Seaman and a list of words that might not be well-known to modern readers. The Annotations section offers an overview of Blackwell's Island Lunatic Asylum as well as notes on Ms. Seaman's participation. Her other books are also listed. This publication offers the main story and the two articles, and nothing else.Excellent book for those interested in history or just curious about this slice of life in New York over a century ago. Four stars.

Nellie Bly was the pen name of Elizabeth Jane Cochrane who was an American journalist. She was born in May of 1864 and died in January 1922. While she was working for a newspaper in New York City she was given an undercover assignment to feign insanity and allow herself to be committed to the Women's Lunatic Asylum on Blackwell's Island in order to write an expose of the inhumane way the women in the Asylum were being treated by caretakers, nurses and even doctors. This book is the true account of what she observed while in that Asylum. She is amazed at how readily people in the medical profession proclaim her insane and how quickly they decide she needs to be committed to an Asylum. Once an inmate in the "Lunatic Asylum" she is dismayed when she sees the patients being taunted, laughed at, and even struck by nurses. The patients were also given inadequate clothing to keep them warm in a hospital that has no heat because the heat is turned on only for certain months of the year. She observes the cold, disgusting and inedible food that is served to the patients while the nurses are being served hot meals and being given fresh fruit. This book, which she wrote from notes she took while in the Asylum, singlehandedly brought about serious reform in this country in the way people are diagnosed as mentally incompetent and also in the way they are treated if they have to be committed. I can't say I "enjoyed" this book but it was very enlightening.

Cone's first two books, 'Black Theology and Black Power' (1969) and 'A Black Theology of Liberation' (1970), outline the philosophical necessity and practical framework of the Black Theology's doctrine. In his third strictly theological work, 'God of the Oppressed', he constructs a systematic theology using African-American religion and tradition as its basis; in it, his aim is two-fold: to respond to the dismissal of Black Theology by white theologians, and to explain the rationale of viewing God as the Liberator despite the centuries of oppression in the US. His thesis is that one's social and historical contexts determine the questions and answers that one can ask and receive from God. To illustrate this social conditioning, he contrasts the way white and black theologies have typically imagined God.Here is a very very brief summary of the book:Cone's first agenda is to address the problem of universality and particularity in Christian theology. He begins by stressing that theology is always contextual and intrinsically related to human experience, and argues that Christian theology must always prophetically address the socio-political conditions and involve liberating marginalized persons. Cone next addresses the question: "Who is Jesus Christ for us today?" His answer involves seeing one's social context and the Bible as dialectically related: Jesus IS Black because he WAS Jewish: Christ enters into our world amongst the poor and despised. The cross displayed God's willingness to suffer with humanity; the resurrection proclaims the liberation on display in Israel's history is now available to all. Cone concludes his work by firmly planting theology within history, arguing that salvation IS liberation, and that ethics must be founded upon it. His work teaches Christians to approach the Bible through the experience of the cross and not the other way around. He concludes that reconciliation precedes liberation, and it is as big of a risk as Jesus' cross: reconciliation is not blacks assuring white liberals that there are no hard feelings; it is God's presence insisting upon the death of the oppressor through tangible reparations.God of the Oppressed is a forceful treatise that develops a theological system by interweaving the redemptive history of Israel, Jesus' gospel of freedom, and the concrete experience of black oppression. Cone has laid the groundwork for re-interpreting classical theological concepts: the Christian God is understood only as the God of the Oppressed. This book challenges one's assumptions regarding how the salvific message of the gospel actually occurs; it also addresses the historical nature of the Christian message: salvation should never be regarded primarily as abstract since the effects of sin are concrete; if God's intention is to free us from sin, then the truth of God's revelation must be understood as historically imbedded. The message of God of the Oppressed is clear: God has opened a new future for the humiliated and abused. Cone is a rare type of theologian: he preaches the gospel as if it were good news.

The book is very good as it explains a point of view of being misunderstood by White theologians from a Black, very well educated theologian from the South. The Kindle version has large and small fonts mixed together and misson words. This is hard on the eyes. The book gets 4 stars, Kindle version 1 star.

Required reading for class, but still great.1 star for the Kindle version having so many typos and missing words. How am I supposed to accurately quote Cone if I'm missing part of the book? Ugh.

very consciousness raising. A little repetitive but new information all the way through. Glad I bought it.

This is just my second copy of God of the Oppressed by James Cone. My first copy was so worn I had to replace it. This new edition was even more inspirational. Cone is one of the foremost Liberation Theologians. He speaks "truth to power". Been a "Conite" since 85.

"The God of the Oppressed" by James H. Cone has been considered a classic in the genre since it's publication over three decades ago in 1975. Obviously, conservative Christians and conservative theologians will disagree with various conclusions in "The God of the Oppressed." However, if one wants to understand the basic tenants of black liberation theology, and one of the "founding fathers" of the movement, then this is the book to read.Cone, like millions of African American Christians before him, parallels the African American experience of slavery with the Israelite's enslavement in Egypt. For Caucasian Christians, it is vital to understand that America as the Promised Land has been a white experience and perspective, and has not been true for the black experience.Cone develops a theology of suffering and of social justice from his interpretation of biblical passages on these topics integrated with the black experience in America. Again, while his interpretations can be offensive to conservative readers, being introduced to them is a good place to begin an intelligent dialogue. Cone's personal philosophy and political policies often seem to impact his biblical interpretations, though this is true with all writers and theologians. For a historical perspective that provides a conservative black expression of the experience of suffering, readers can consider Beyond the Suffering. Beyond the Suffering: Embracing the Legacy of African American Soul Care and Spiritual Direction

Cone is fabulous. A must-read. But get the paper version. This kindle edition has poor spelling, leaves out words, varies in font size, and even changes some words. It even put "can" instead of "can't" and messed with punctuation. This book is a classic. At least copy-edit it before you send it live.

Fantastic read! Cones view of liberation and theology are important. God must be for the oppressed or must be not at all.

Review

“An intricate, splendid, and utterly memorable book.”—The New York Times Book Review“Warm, human, rich with a cacophony of Indian voices, India: A Million Mutinies Now is about the passions and tragedies of a nation caught between the rush of modernity and the power of tradition. . . . An indispensable book for understanding India at the end of the 20th century.”—The Washington Post“Brilliantly penetrating and shrewd. . . . Each story, evoked by Naipaul’s sensitive and nuanced probing, reflects complexities and contradictions and gives us a glimpse, however tiny, of the mosaic totality that comprises India.”—The Chicago Tribune “Beautifully written, intellectually satisfying. . . . Naipaul is a rare combination of born narrator, who brings to life the places and people he encounters.”—Foreign Affairs“Compassionate. . . . Leaves the reader with a powerful sense of [a] people’s dedication, perseverance and passion.”—The New York Times “Travel writing, history, novel, lyric—Naipaul’s book partakes of the excellence of every category and fulfills itself in one of the oldest and rarest of forms—prophecy. It bears witness, in unforgettable language, to the best of hopes in the worst of times.”—The Christian Science Monitor “Naipaul has retired the familiar, infuriating, immobile face of India and painted a fresh one of human spirit and dramatic change.”—Time “A shifting kaleidoscope of images of a country almost impossible to imagine, but made more comprehensible due to Naipaul’s formidable intelligence and prodigious narrative gifts.”—Boston Sunday Herald “Naipaul creates his India slowly, through whole life-stories told in the characters’ own voices. . . . The detail is wonderful, built up with impeccable care.”—The Economist “[Naipaul] has invaluably revealed the brink on which India now stands, the sources of all that rage and all those little mutinies. . . . There is a powerful feeling of change in this book.”—Los Angeles Times “Compelling, almost hypnotic. . . . A rich, multilayered portrait of a nation we know far too little about in the West. You will feel you have learned much about India, yet you will sense how much more—how very much more—remains to be learned.”—Seattle Times “Authentic. . . . These narratives record, in human terms, the rich and disturbing diversity of contemporary India. . . . Extraordinary.”—Newsday “There is a great temptation to quote too much of Naipaul, for in reading the novelist, essayist and travel writer we realize the accuracy of those who consider him one of the finest writers in the language; a man with intense intellectual curiosity, as well as an inherited sympathy for inhabitants of the Third World.”—The Oregonian “A superb raga of a book, a raga of morning curiosity and evening meditation. . . . This may be [Naipaul’s] most generous work, and his best non-fiction.”—The San Diego Union-Tribune “An absorbing journey through the mind of India. . . . Mutinies will surprise those who have read and ranted at Naipaul’s earlier books on India.”—St. Petersburg Times “Brilliant.”—The Spectator (London) “In-depth. . . . Beautifully written, this book gives a personal look at the societal and political forces pushing for change in the country.”—Minneapolis Star Tribune “Prescient. . . . Naipaul’s intuitions and indefatigable on-the-spot research were well ahead of the academic reaction. . . . [He is] a writer who will always be read—and not just by academics—for his intelligence and insight and for the clarity and elegance of his style.”—The Times Higher Education Supplement “One of the most intelligent writers of our time. . . . Naipaul’s word-pictures of India are lyrical, spare, precise and vivid. . . . He succeeds—brilliantly—in integrating India’s individual truths with a larger picture of the country.”—The Toronto Star

The description fails to make clear that this is a collection of essays, arranged by subject matter. Most were published originally in the New York Review of Books. Read together they result in a book choppy, turgid, and a bit repetitive in its concerns. Read individually, as originally intended, they are fine. So if you buy the book, read one at a time then put it down for a few days. These essays are forty years old now. For the most part their topics -- the nature of Indian civilization and the Indian mindset, M. Gandhi's attitudes and development, and his effect on Indian society -- remain timely. But the frequent references to the Emergency no longer have any real relevance, especially since the event is unexplained (because the NYRB's readers at the time were aware of it).

Nobel prize winner V.S. Naipaul's masterpiece on India is a must-read for any Westerner seeking a deeper understanding of India. Naipaul tells the story of this incredibly complex country person by person, through in-depth interviews of his subjects not on politics, culture or religion but on their personal lives. Naipaul tells the stories of a wide range of characters--a secretary to a prominent businessman, members of the Bombay underworld, a Marxist rebel. He tells the story of Amir, the descendant of the Raja of Mahmudabad, now living in the palace his ancestors had gotten from the British, lost after Partition, and regained after he became a successful Muslim politician in a Hindu area. And the story of Kakusthan, a modern man who returned to tradition and the life of a pure Brahmin, in a ghetto surrounded by a Muslim neighborhood. And the story of Ashok, who rejected an arranged marriage, managed to break into marketing as a career, and now struggled with the decline of the genteel, Anglo business world he had grown up in. Naipaul's great talent is in ferreting out the details of everyday life--what his people ate, wore, above all where they lived--often in tiny 10' by 10' rooms with wife and children. One comes away with a great appreciation of the notion of caste, so embedded in the society and culture for religious and non-religious alike. One also begins to appreciate what a struggle life in India is for everyone, especially those who live in cities. This book is full of stories of struggle--against tradition, to preserve tradition, between castes, between Hindu and Muslim--and of more down to earth struggles--to find a job, to find housing, to choose a career. Unfortunately Naipaul wasn't able to interview women with the ease he interviewed men--not surprising in this traditional society--and women appear only as shadowy wives and mothers in the narrative. But a great book nevertheless.

The author is very honest in his opinion. However sometimes I found him to be insensitive as he showed a tendency to undermine the feelings of people in the subcontinent in general. However, it is better to be truthful than 'politically correct'.

The country of India is of sufficient importance to all of us today that there is a real need for resources to help us develop a greater understanding, whether we are a traveler, business person working with India, or simply one interested in becoming more informed, such as myself. I don't expect that to be accomplished by only one book, so the challenge is to select a couple of volumes which together can do the job. For myself, this book is one that I have selected to help my own understanding of India.India: A Million Mutinies Now was originally published in 1990, and this edition brings it back into availability, with a new preface by the author. It is the third volume of a trilogy written by Naipaul on India, the first two being An Area of Darkness, and India: A Wounded Civilization. It does date back 20 years, and for that reason does not take into account the many developments and changes in India since that time, so if you must have something that reflects today's India in all respects, this may fall short in some ways.Author V. S. Naipaul (2001 Nobel Prize in Literature) is acclaimed both for his fiction and non-fiction. He was born in Chaguanas, Trinidad and Tobago, to parents of Indian descent. In this book, he describes India through a series of stories covering people from many castes and different backgrounds. As these various individuals stories are told, and as you begin to grasp how they deal with the day-to-day problems of living in an overcrouded country, and surviving within the caste system still in place, you find that your understanding of India is beginning to come together. It is a long book (500+ pages), full of interesting vignettes and covering a very wide variety of individuals from all walks of Indian life.If you are considering purchase of this book, then I would also refer you to the Amazon comments to the earlier 1990 edition (India: A Million Mutinies Now), which remain valid for this new printing. As alternates or supplements to this book, I would also suggest India: A Portrait, recently issued, and I am sure that there are many others. I will continue to add to this review if I do come across other books that I feel should also be mentioned.

I feel such a downer to write this review. I really expected to like this book, but I don't. I celebrated Saint Lucia Day with my young sons (5 and 3) last year by bringing them tea and scones in bed with candlelight. They loved it. I knew nothing about Saint Lucia apart from what I read as a young girl in the American Girl Kristen books. It was so special and magical to me from that story alone that I decided to celebrate Saint Lucia Day with my sons. This year I wanted them to have a story to connect to Saint Lucia and give us a better understanding of this festival. A few reviews commented on language and maturity of this book and another about the emphasis on going to church. Going to church does not make this book more familiar or comfortable. Even with our church background this book was overly mature and not the story I was expecting. The whole conversation between the mother and daughter feels very contrived. I also bought Lucia Morning in Sweden and I am hoping when it arrives I will like it better, otherwise I recommend Kristen's Surprise: A Christmas Story. I haven't read it in years, but it left me with a sense of wonder and awe about Saint Lucia day when I was a little girl. I would not read this book to young children, maybe 10? Two stars for illustrations and sheet music at end of story. For spoilers and a long review please read on.Lucia, Saint of Light, starts out fine with four children preparing a Lucia breakfast for their parents, the oldest, Lucy, is Saint Lucia, her sisters are her attendants and her brothers are dressed up in star boy hats and carrying star boy poles (That was interesting. I didn't know anything about star-boys, please explain. Well it never did.) The children carry breakfast to their parents while singing a Saint Lucia song. The family continues their celebration of the day bringing breakfast to an elderly neighbor from Sweden. All of that was fine and I read it to my, now, six year old son, but then I very briefly skimmed, rephrased and summarized the rest of the book (14 more pages with pictures).Once when Lucy was younger she asked her mother for the story about Saint Lucia and then you get to read what feels like a very staged conversation between the mother and daughter. Things like,"St. Lucia was born late in the third century in the Roman Empire and was raised to be a Christian.""But wasn't it against the law to be a Christian back then?"My mother smiled. "You've been paying attention to the saints' lives in church haven't you?"Really? Other phrases such as "she loved God so much that she didn't want to marry anyone but her heavenly Bridegroom, Jesus Christ." Maybe this isn't awkward language for some Christian families, but that is not how I would have phrased her desire to devote her life to God. As another reviewer stated "pleased with her desire to remain a virgin." I also could not think of an appropriate way to explain that to my six year old son. And the mother explains how Saint Lucia gave away here dowry and a girl couldn't be married without a dowry. Then Lucy pipes in, " Like the Saint Nicholas story! Saint Nicholas left money in their stockings so they could get married." "That's right." My sons know the Saint Nicholas story too and they would easily make that connection, so it is weird to read something that explains something that they already know. Just to read that to them would sound demeaning. Then again not all families know the Saint Nicholas story, so this could be an introduction that, for some, would feel less contrived. Then we read how she was arrested for being a Christian and the Holy Spirit came down on her so that she was so heavy she could not be moved by the Roman soldiers, nor by several yoke of oxen, nor did the fire touch her when they tried to burn her. Well that was all very interesting and worth reading....until I turned the page."Finally, one of the soldiers drove his sword into her throat. Lucia said one last prayer, then gave up her spirit into the hands of her heavenly Bridegroom. She was buried with honor and became the patron saint of her city, Syracuse."Wait....they drove a sword into her throat?! This is not what I was trying to accomplish. I just wanted a story about the bread and the candles. For those of you wanting details of her holy life this might be what you wanted, but I just read of her life and death and nowhere did it mention a crown of candles and bread.Lucy asks why she is the patron saint of Sweden. Mother explains, Saint Lucia saved Sweden from a terrible famine during the darkest day of a most terrible winter sailing in a boat across a lake during the middle ages. Lucy interjects some more, mother explains some more. Now I'm confused. When did this happen exactly? This happened after she died? The book is not really clear. There are two sentences in the book that tell the story that I was hoping this book would be about."There was also a legend that Lucia used to visit Christians hiding in the catacombs. In order to keep her hands free to carry food she brought them, she wore candles on her head." That was it. They go on to explain the meaning of her name, the white dress, red sash, Lucia cats (breakfast buns), and the coffee. End of story. Two stars for great illustrations and the lovely sheet music "Santa Lucia" at the end and there is a recipe for Lucia Cats included as well as many resources. I considered saving this until my sons were older, but I'll probably donate it to the library. I will quote the one star reviewer. "Oy. What a crappy book."

We are very happy with this book because it explains both the origins of the St. Lucia story and her martyrdom as well as the modern day traditions that are common among Swedes today. Included are the traditional St. Lucia song with music and also a recipe for saffron buns. It answered a lot of questions I had about the holiday and is an interesting story! The only thing I didn't care for were some of the supernatural descriptions of St. Lucia and her survival/death/miracles. However, since that is how the legend goes it makes sense for it to be in the book. Definitely read through first before reading it to kids to make sure it gets with your beliefs.

I wanted to like this book better than I did. I felt that the text was affected and unnatural. Kids under 7 probably won't notice. It has lovely pictures, though, some recipes and it's a good way to provide some background to the feast day.

I love the illustrations in this book. It is very in depth and a lovely story. I would have liked to see the story told more "succinctly". It is a little long and too descriptive for my young kids. I tried to read this to a group of preschoolers/young elementary kids at a Lucia party we had and I lost their attention pretty quickly. I think this is more appropriate for older elementary ages - 8+.

Wanted to use as a read aloud - however, this book is a little too religious and too wordy for second grade. I think sections of it are great

My culture, my heritage

Both my 3 and 4 year old love this book. I think that they appreciate the pictures and are curious of this is also a tradition we should start at home. It covers the saint in the context of a little girl who's family celebrates the feast of St. Lucy every year with some traditions of cooking and the lighted wreath.

It is wonderful to find orthodox children's books. My children enjoy the stories of the saints, but a book with pictures keeps my children's attention better.
