#89,101 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I am 83 years old. I reached 35 without ever playing a musical instrument and began fooling around with homemade stringed instruments and the recorder. In my 40s, I bought a used student-grade flute and made some progress. Later, I tried the clarinet. Then my musical playing lapsed for almost four decades as I got involved with social folk dance and ice dance instead. A few months ago, with more leisure available and new dentures, I got the old flute out again. I had forgotten how complicated the fingering is, how maddening getting good embouchure is, and the dexterity required just to hold the flute when fingers are flying. I struggled with downloaded fingering charts and technique articles. Then I discovered this book Flute For Dummies. It is crammed with so much information. There are hundreds of hints and tricks. The sequence of instruction is logical and productive. Suddenly I am making progress. The author's writing style is light but thorough.

This is an excellent book for flautists and aspiring flautists of any skill level. Not only is it clearly and well written, it also includes a bonus CD of lovely recordings to help students follow and stay on track. I love Ms. Moratz' clever verbiage and her humor shines through like sunshine. This is a book that will keep on giving. Just be dedicated and determined and you will delight yourself with your improvement plus your knowledge base. It is a trusty co-pilot, always within easy reach. Even if you are an autodidactic flautist, make this book your best friend.Hats off to Karen Moratz!

I would recommend this book for anyone trying to learn the flute. Younger players might find it tough, but help should be easy from a parent. It is extremely readable and I thoroughly enjoyed the humor and personal insights.I have read and re-read this book several times in my quest to learn the flute. I believe that its major use is as a vade mecum in that regard. So, it is always close to my practice stand. I looked at a number of other books and manuals and none really measured up. No book will make you a flutist - that only comes with practice. But, with a lot of work, a good teacher, and reference to this book you are well on the way to success.Kudos to Karen Moratz!

Rather than a straightforward tutorial, this book gives you the lessons (and a CD of music to play along with) but also background, history, anecdotes and so on. It's an enjoyable read, and I find myself picking up the instrument to practice after reading for a while. Like all the "Dummies" books, it starts very simple, but there's enough meat in the text to make it both useful and enjoyable.

I played the flute from fourth grade through college but never had serious private instruction on the instrument. In five minutes of browsing through Karen Evan Moratz's book I discovered more about the instrument than I had learned in 12 years of school! This book is easy to follow, gives practical instruction for even the most beginning of beginners, but also provides tips and historical information that seasoned veterans will find helpful. The enclosed CD is beautifully recorded and Cyndee Giebler's accompaniments are delightful. I highly recommend this book/cd set for any amateur flute enthusiast!

Very comprehensive. Many interesting facts about flutes. Must have this book BEFORE purchasing a flute. Covers history, flute design, music theory, technique, has CD

Divided into easy to follow chapters that can be referenced individually and still make sense. I played flute in high school and not much after that for 30 years. Recently I joined a band and a woodwind ensemble in St Louis that are receptive to returning players. I have played flute but never studied flute playing. This text is a good fit for me, an intermediate player with renewed motivation to play my flute better for myself and for my ensembles. The author has a sense of humor that she incorporates into the narrative which keeps the text and exercises, "light" and enjoyable.

It has been 38 years since I played flute in school band. I really needed to start over and learn everything again. It explained everything from history of the flute, how to put it together, how to hold it, why to hold it that way, and how to shop for, clean and care for my flute.

I'm almost through this book and I am so proud to have it... there is a wealth of knowledge in this one book... I've read a number of books on Pagan/Witchcraft for over a year now and this is one of my favorites... also, I'm delighted with the binding and feel of this book, you can bend it and fold it and lay it open and it's just wonderful to hold in your hands... I wish all paperbacks were bound this way with these materials... recommend this?... if I could afford it, I'd buy copies and give them to everyone I know...

For beginners: this book is highly referenced among Pagan circles and you will hear about it quite frequently if you attend workshops, seminars or are generally socially active in the Pagan community.I appreciated Adler's commentary in the prologue as it includes valuable and informative information about how she came to write the book and what she has learned since it was published. The book itself is a comfortable blend of academic and anecdotal writing that includes some of the most intensive firsthand research into contemporary Pagans from our own perspectives. Adler comes off as highly credible and her insights are a welcome relief from other similar books that come across as too academic. The writing is very humanist, easy to follow and very citable as Adler is considered an authority on the Pagan community (mostly in part to this book). This is a very valuable product to have in my Kindle collection.Edit:(7/28/14) Margot Adler's work has been tremendously influential and helpful to the Pagan community and she will be sorely missed.

I never read the first edition of Margo Adler's guide to earth-based religion in the United States, but after her recent death, I decided to check out the 2006 update. Adler had an inquiring mind, and coming from an irreligious family, she was draw to life-affirming rituals rather than religious dogma. She loved dancing around the May Pole, getting lost in Greek drama and feeling like Athena, and, eventually, drawing down the circle. Her interest coincided with Second Wave feminism, and after delving into a little paganism, she used her journalistic skills to track down its origins. Armed with a journalism degree, she sought out the Celtic and English roots of rituals that grew after Britain withdrew it's ban on witchcraft, and what she found was intriguing, if it wasn't particularly orthodox. Then she interviewed a variety of practitioners there and in the U.S. She is a dogged researcher and a generous interviewer and interpreter, and there's really nothing else quite like this account. Even though witchcraft doesn't call to me, I can identify with the search for celebration of nature without dogma and with a reverence for the feminine aspects of the divine. Her description of magic is that of an art rather than anything superhuman, and I found it intriguing.

A great update of a wonderful book. Margot Adler was an incredible journalist and documented a movement in its early years that has now become relatively mainstream. Comprehensive, well written. I had the opportunity to meet Margot and she was a wonderful source of information and clarity regarding the neo-pagan movement.

The latest edition has been brought up to date on many counts, though it would readily stand on its own legs with regards to an overview of a variety of pagan relgions/beliefs as well as to paint a historical picture of where/how many different systems have come/evolved from. It gives you plenty of brainfood to mull on as well as a lot of historical perspective (even if it is limited to the lens of one author and several hundred different practioners of various systems).

This book is a good history of the neo-pagan movement. It is clear that some time has passed since the writing of the book and present day, but when looking for a historical perspective, that isn't all bad. It has lots of resources in the back to find out more information, although I have not yet checked to see if those are also out of date. My only negative, the sheer amount of time that was spent discussing feminism and neo-pagans. I get that there was/is a strong correlation between the two movements, but it seemed a little excessive to me. I'm very happy it contained information about a variety of neo-pagan groups.

Although the author, a High Priestess of the Craft has passed this past July, 2014, she has left behind a book worthy of including on your shelf if you are interested in Neo-Paganism and surrounds. She did a lot of research, asked a lot of questions and wrote on many topics. This book has been around a long time and she revised this last edition.

Even though this book was written decades ago, much of this is still applicable for the modern Pagan or scholar. Adler has revised the text and has many wonderful resources for the reader to continue their exploration. I might add that this is one of the more objective texts I've read on the subject and certainly leaves the reader feeling open to their own ideas and beliefs about Paganism and Earth Religions.

Amazon.com Review

Edward Gorey is an author and an illustrator who has carved a unique niche creating macabre graphic novels that are part satire and part social commentary--comics for adults. Though often relating lurid tales of Victorian crime, Gorey eschews blood and gore in favor of atmosphere and humor. Here the editors have collected a representative sample of his work. Ross, an artist, and Wilkin, an art critic, also provide a useful introductory essay on Gorey's work and an informative interview with him. The book includes a complete bibliography and photographs of Gorey's library and studio.

From Booklist

Habitual watchers of PBS TV's long-running Mystery! may constitute the largest number of Edward Gorey fans--provided, of course, that they all love the show's animated introduction, for it is Gorey's contribution. Long before the show, Gorey had attracted a staunch band of admirers with his gravely humorous rhymed stories set in an Edwardian never-never land and illustrated in children's picture-book fashion, one drawing per page or line of verse. If your child had a somewhat morbid sense of humor, they could be marvelous children's books, but they were basically for adults fascinated by Gorey's literary and artistic allusions and the droll dreariness of his densely crosshatched style (although he rarely uses color, his thicket of lines ineluctably conjures them in the mind's eye; of course, all are the hues of dusk). Besides a little gallery of his work, this sampler includes a literate admiration by Wilkin and a splendidly amusing tete-a-tete with the artist by Ross. Ray Olson

If you like Edward Gorey then you really owe it to yourself to get a copy of this very fine book. The authors, Clifford Ross and Karen Wilkin are artist and art critic, respectively. Ross begins the book with an interview with Edward Gorey himself in which they talk about other painters (Matisse, Albert York, Picasso, Manet and Max Ernst in particular); Surrealism; the creative process (included are a number of sketches and notes for finished drawings); Gorey's theater pieces; fiction; and television. Wilkin's piece follows next in which she discusses the "band of crypto-Edwardians" that appear so many of Gorey's books as compared to the illustrations he does for books by other authors, for Mystery Theater and for the stage, opera, theater and ballet. She has a very interesting perspective on Gorey's work within both historical and cultural contexts. The second half of the book contains numerous drawings and designs followed by a chronology of Gorey's life (rich with photographs of his home, including one of his cats) and a bibliography. A very interesting book. The only thing I would have added is a section on the Gorey cats (the ones that grace the Amphigorey books).

Love it!

What a beautiful book. I just love Edward Gorey's stories and art. Received in great condition as well. Thank you!

After all the work that Karen has done on Edward Gorey, it amazes me that she knows so little about him. This book was a huge disappointment to me, and most of it was a direct result of Karen Wilkin's romatic ramblings. It seems to me that she should go back and really read her other book, Ascending Peculiarty. That one is much better, more informative, and personal.

cool

He walked aloneIn lonely halls filled with booksSurrounded by ghostsYou can never read enough Edward Gorey books or Haiku’s for that matter. My review has both. This was my first purchase of the late illustrator's work and was pleased with my purchase. I always had fond memories of watching the animated introduction to Mystery! on PBS and decided to begin a small collection of his works. It features odds and ends of published and unpublished art, interviews and photos. Great introduction to the "World of Gorey".

First, I'm not sure what the few very poor reviews are all about. This is a book with solid appeal for any fan of Gorey who has done nothing but look at his work. I found the included interview to be quite informative; sure, it's just a small sampling of what you find in 'Ascending Peculiarity' (a collection of interviews), but it gives you a nice glimpse into Gorey's weird, hyper-intelligent personality, as well as his influences and his opinions on his own work. Gorey also mentions some of his materials/equipment in the interview, which is always of interest to drawing geeks who try to emulate him, like me.The accompanying analytical essay by Karen Wilkinson was also quite good, I thought. I think it's unfair to dismiss the essay as "romantic ramblings" as one reviewer did - Wilkinson adroitly dissects Gorey's world while directly referencing lots of (included) samples of his work, ranging from his early uncredited book title drawings to his set design work for 'Dracula' and other plays. Also discussed at length is his more famous material, that collected in the 'Amphigorey' compilation books. This book is an excellent sampling of Gorey's work, much of which is NOT found in the 'Amphigorey' books (the most common acquaintance most people have with Gorey). For that reason it was still an interesting buy for me, even owning two of those books. The interview is good and I found the essay, which is fairly lengthy, a nice distillation of what Gorey's work is all about. If you're a fan of Gorey you can't go wrong with this, at least not at the super-low used book prices.

THE WORLD OF EDWARD GOREY, by Clifford Ross and Karen Wilkin, is an overview of the great artist, writer, and droll humorist. While Gorey is one of my favourite literary figures, I found this book to be of limited appeal. The first part of the book is Ross' interview with Gorey, a rather unimpressive piece that sheds little light on Gorey's development. Ross will bring up painters or authors of the past, and Gorey will either mildly approve, or speak badly of them. Gorey doesn't really seem up to the discussion, and all in all this is a disappointment. What follows, however, is fairly enlightening: Wilkin's essay "Mr. Earbrass Jots Down a Few Visual Notes" explores the various themes of Gorey's work (such as children meeting unfortunate ends), allusions to earlier artists (such as Klee) in his work, and the way he constructs plots. This is a more substantial piece than the interview, though really it will be of interest only to those who wish to deeply explore all facets of Gorey's creations. The second half of the book are the plates, and this is what really might attract casual lovers of Gorey's work even if they already have the "Amphigorey" collections. Here we find examples not from just his well-known books, but also drawings from unpublished ones, simple sketches of what later became mature material, and many of the book covers and theatrical designs he did for other literary works. I was quite surprised to see Gorey's book covers, since to me his style doesn't fit Muriel Spark or Gogol at all, but apparently he was quite sought after back in the day.If you are a really intense fan of Gorey and want to know more about his critical reception, THE WORLD OF EDWARD GOREY may be worth looking at. Those who just get an occasional chuckle from his idiosyncracy, however, should pass.

Infinity is the first event written by Hickman after he took over creative direction on both the Avengers and New Avengers titles and mostly serves as the payoff to the slow burning plot of the mysterious Builders from his Avengers series. Over the course of the first three volumes of said title, Hickman has introduced the concept of an ancient alien race, the Builders, who seeded the numerous worlds of the galaxy for evolution. Now, the Builders have returned to cut a bloody swath through space on a path that will lead them straight to Earth. The Avengers, led by Captain America, blast off into space to team up with an unlikely alliance of aliens who are imperiled by the Builder's onslaught: Annihilus of the Negative Zone, the Brood, the Shi'ar Empire, the Kree, and the Spartax. Meanwhile, as the main host of the Avengers travel off world to combat the Builders, Thanos and his Black Order descend on a relatively unguarded Earth to claim a mysterious prize.Infinity's problem is that it is a mishmash of two much stronger events: the Jim Starlin Infinity Gaunlet/Infinity War stories about Thanos and the Annihilation story arc about Annihilus' invasion of the galaxy. The Builders are never sufficiently fleshed out as enemies (and the world building attributed to them in Hickman's Avengers series had been minimal at best previously) and end up feeling like another big cosmic threat not unlike the Annihilation Wave or the Phalanx. They decide to wipe out all life that resists them and the Avengers marshal the resistance. The action is fun enough and big enough to provide a decent read and it is great to see the Avengers team up with so many other characters from the cosmic branch of Marvel's stories. That said, the Builders in the end are a bit of a let down because they are revealed to be another symptom of the wider "incursion" story arc that runs throughout Hickman's New Avengers title and laid the groundwork for his much stronger Secret Wars crossover. The Builders really want to destroy Earth to prevent any future incursions from wiping out the entire universe, but that doesn't explain why they feel the need to attack and wipe out all the other races in the galaxy as well. The Thanos story arc seems like it should be the bigger one (he is on the cover after all), but frankly Thanos' role in the story feels like an afterthought. His role is a B plot that keeps the Illuminati busy while they also deal with another incursion event. Hickman adds a lot to Thanos' mythos in this book by introducing the characters of the Black Order (Thanos' elite generals) and Thane (Thanos' son). However, I myself am not a huge fan of the Black Order as they are essentially grim dark mini bosses (only Corvus Glaive and Proximia Midnight end up feeling like real characters by the end). Furthermore, a few of them are defeated really easily (Black Dwarf gets his tail handed to him twice) and they don't end up living up to all the hype. Thane is a stronger character, but he gets so little to do in the overarching story that he never justifies being such a major part of Thanos' plans (he is the real reason Thanos decides to invade). Jeff Lemire's recent Thanos series did a lot more with members of the Black Order and with Thane especially. All in all, Infinity is a decent read but nowhere near as good as Hickman's Secret Wars or any of Starlin's classic Thanos stories.

This is a good story, but the problem is that it's not self-contained. If you haven't read the comics leading up to this book, then it won't make sense.

Ultimately, if you like Hickman's previous work, you'll probably like this.  I didn't like it, but I know lots of people who love Hickman so, if that’s you, please enjoy.  Normally I don't like Hickman and stay away from his work. But when the Infinity War movie was coming out, the digital version went on sale and I thought it might be relevant since several of Thanos' minions are prominently featured.  But this book has very little to do with the movie. The story is typical Hickman. He does his usual thing of forcing big dramatic moments without earning them and between those bits he shoves in meaningless existential ponderings that would make the Wachowski siblings applaud.  It isn't a very accessible story unless you are already up to date with that particular point of Avengers history. Several questions or problems raised at the beginning of the story are either left unresolved by the end of the story or resolved off camera in an unsatisfying way. And when it comes to the ending (mild spoiler)the big threat of the story gets resolved the exact same way it would have if the Avengers stayed home and just sat around the mansion.  And the extra story with the Silver Surfer at the end felt like complete filler.

What an epic blockbuster event this is. Quality stuff and showing te modern Marvel at its finest. Infinity War took most of the inspiration of this event aside of Infinity Gauntlet of course. First appearance of the Black Order and the invasion of Wakanda you see in the movie too.

Brilliant cosmic crossover event from Jonathan Hickman. With the Avengers off world fighting the Universe-seeding god-race the Builders, the mad Titan Thanos sees his opportunity to strike at the earth; his target is not quite what you would expect and a mystery from the Inhumans past bears bitter fruit. This leads directly to the (somewhat disappointing) Inhumanity storyline, and also to the more subtle and impressive Thanos; A God Up There Listening.

I’ll probably have to read this a few more time to truly appreciate it, because there really was a lot going on here. I think that ended up being a slight downfall and some of these moments could have been cut down a little or a whole lot. But overall we have some moments that will truly become legendary in Marvel canon. It is a huge and beautiful book that is well constructed. Anyone that has read Jonathan Hickman knows what sort of intricate multilayered storylines he is capable of delivering and Jim Cheung is one of the very best artists working today.

If you go into this book cold, like me, then you won't fully appreciate it. I feel there were a lot of story left out that you need to read in order to fully appreciate the story. The 2 storyline coming together at the end was kind of jarring for me. It didn't feel that great of a story to me after I finished it. Too much was missing from the book for me to fully enjoy it as a stand alone.

Yes aspects of this story are a bit similar to previous events that have occurred in the Marvel universe, but so what. All of the pieces put together are simply a thrilling ride.As each story converges with what has been happening in Hickman's Avengers the stakes continue to rise. All together makes a story that is the reason I read comics. The book itself is masterfully put together also. Since it combines Avengers and New Avengers they have cut and spliced the story into chronological order. It makes the read a breeze. You can't go wrong with this book.

Review

Tracing the origins of Blackbeard the Pirate, this sequel to Blackhearts (2016) reunites Teach and Anne, but not before each of them crosses the Atlantic in separate, grueling journeys to Nassau. On the island, dark-skinned Anne’s friendship with enemies of Governor Webb leads to her being nearly kidnapped into slavery after a savage beating. Teach’s own trouble with Webb forces him into a dangerous mission to save the lives of his men. The journey is complicated when he smuggles an unconscious Anne aboard his ship and encounters more seasoned pirates with their own beefs with Webb. The swashbuckling romance is tempered with bracing brutality, political trickery, and discrimination inherent to the era. Depictions of whippings and bloody battles are vivid, and so are the passion and complexity of the main characters in their dedication to one another and in doing what is right—or as close to right as burgeoning pirates can muster. Sell it as an action-packed romance or adventure-laced historical fiction; there’s something here to please almost everyone. — Heather Booth (Booklist April 1, 2017)

An action-packed, heartbreaking, and riveting sequel, BLACKSOULS continues the tale of Teach and Anne as they each set sail for Nassau with the hope of reuniting and establishing a life together. Theirs is a treacherous journey filled with dangerous obstacles, devastating losses, brutal enemies, and unexpected allies. It will test their strength, loyalty, and resilience. And it will awaken their hunger for justice and unleash their thirst for revenge.Anne was anxious about arriving in Nassau without knowing whether Teach survived his overseas voyage or whether they’d be able to find one another if he had. But having become close friends with two of her fellow passengers, Cara and Coyle, made her endlessly grateful that she wasn’t arriving in that crowded, unruly port city alone.Nassau was not how she imagined it would be. With its open acceptance of the slave trade, and its cruel and barbaric treatment of its colored inhabitants, she was ill-prepared for its challenges and the emotional toll it would take on her. Even surrounded by friends, and with a safe place to sleep and work, she wasn’t sure she had enough protection or the skills to protect herself. And if she wanted to ensure her survival, she would have to learn to use a weapon, she would have to learn to fight, and she would have to learn to focus her anger so that she could become ruthless.Teach was desperate to get to Nassau so that he could find Anne and they could finally be together without his overbearing father getting in the way. But a threat to his ship’s safety and a captain whose actions would likely get them all killed, meant making decisions that could cause problems for him and the crew if they managed to survive. With corruption abounding in Nassau, his hope of staying under the radar was impossible. He couldn’t even set foot on land before trouble found him. So, he was going to have to find a way to outsmart the Governor if he had any hope of clearing his name, saving his crew, and keeping Anne safe.Nicole Castroman delivered a follow-up that is even more exciting than its predecessor. Battles at sea, the threat of mutiny, a hunt for pirates, the promise of adventure, an attempted murder, all add to this extraordinary, gripping, fascinating tale. It’s a love story. It’s the story of a legend. But it’s also a story about injustice, about human decency, about equality for women.BLACKSOULS is suspenseful. It is heartrending. And emotional. And authentic. It is fast-paced, and imaginative and captivating and amazing. It is a fresh, new, different, and exhilarating addition to this already incredible series with a change in setting, a quickening of pace, an increase in drama, and a number of surprising developments. It is the perfect continuation of Teach and Anne’s story and is an absolutely, definitely, must read sequel.

BLACKSOULS is the sequel I had hoped it would be and so much more. If you ever wondered what reading The Pirates of the Caribbean would like, this series is it! Though I'll be honest, I love that this is it's own storyline, complete with a sweeping romance, plenty of danger on the high seas, and nonstop action. From gun battles, sword fights, cannons, and much more. I loved that the women in this book were just as fierce, and as strong as the men.Do you have the song, "A pirate's life for me," stuck in your head yet?I absolutely loved jumping back into the dangerous world Teach and Anne live in. My word, there's non stop thrills in this book. Mixed into all the deception, dangers, and betrayal, I loved those stolen moments Teach and Anne have. I can't get enough of their story. I love that for all these two have been through, and how it's change them, it hasn't changed how they feel for each other. Thank you Castroman for ripping my heart out, yet again... I mean that in a good way.Castroman's sequel definitely does not fall into the second book syndrome. This book was totally worth losing sleep over. From vivid imaginary, to a cast of fabulous new characters we meet, to danger on the seas and on the island, this book had me glued to the pages. If you've ever wondered what it would be like to a pirate, read this book. You'll be left feeling like you have wind swept hair, salt stuck to your skin, and can hear seagulls off in the distance.Trust me, if you aren't a fan of pirates, you will be when you finish reading this book! This is one of my favorite series, and I can hardly wait to read the third book. Especially when that killer of an ending! This is one series I don't want to end. This is one book I highly recommend picking up!

It’s rare that I enjoy a sequel to a book that I loved even more than the original, but that was certainly the case with Blacksouls. This book is adventurous and swoony but also has some really important messages and themes as well.Blacksouls was an absolute pleasure to read. I fell in love with this series with Blackhearts, but I actually enjoyed this second book even more. Nicole Castroman took everything great that she had going on in Blackhearts and just really took it to the next level. One thing that I adored about this book, is how it continued the steady progression through Blackbeard’s origin story that Castroman began in Blackhearts. It takes it time, developing his character at just the perfect pace. There hasn’t been just one sudden, devastating event that turned him from merchant’s son to pirate, but a steady progression of plot points that are pushing his character ever closer to the Blackbeard of legend.I also love the fact that these books are not just about Blackbeard (Teach). They are equally about Anne, who is an incredible character in her own right. She has her own story that is so important and is applicable both to the time period the story is told in and today. Her story really focuses on the themes of discrimination, feminism, and the horrors of slavery. The romance between Anne and Teach continues to sizzle. I love the dynamic between the two of them. I adore that Anne is so completely herself with him, and their banter is always so much fun to read. Castroman has done a great job continuing the storyline of the romance into book two, so that it is still just as compelling as it was in book one. This book does have some high-seas adventure, but a lot of the story does still take place on land, this time in Nassau. The way the setting is progressively taking place more and more at sea perfectly reflects the progression of Teach’s character, and I very much enjoyed that.I loved this book, and I’m so hoping for another installment in this series!

First off, I have to admit I did not know who Coach Wooden was. It was not until his passing that I heard about him and his many, universal acknowledgements in his leadership. That's when I looked on Amazon and ordered 2 of his books, including this one.If you are in a leadership position (people mgr, coach, head of household, etc), then I would say this is one of the best books on leadership ever written. I read >20 business books a year so that is not a statement I say lightly, including many other ones that has greatly shaped me as Ken Blanchard's Leadership at a Higher level, etc. However, Wooden's book here stands out like a tall mountain, in that he goes straight to the point, bares his heart & values in full transparency, and is genuinely unselfish in sharing his wisdom. Other books tend to glorize the author and his/her book concepts too much, but in this book Wooden shares it without any attempt to bask himself in the spotlight. Jamison does a great job in the writing style of this book and I wished more business/leadership books were like this. His points are easy to understand, stimulates thoughts in your own situations, and made me hungry to read more. In the end of this short book, I found his words helped me improve my leadership styles/skills greatly, identified gaps where I need to improve, and overall more inspired to be the best leader I can be - which is precisely what coach Wooden set out to do. This is an invaluable book that clearly communicates what this great man believed in - that all of us owes ourselves to give 100%, and be the best we can be. As leaders we need to teach that to our team, and if we do that effectively, winning will come as a byproduct automatically.highly recommended. I can't say more.

Brilliant book, incredible man. I knew a little about Wooden before this book but I am so glad I read this. His quotes are priceless!!"If you don't have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over?""It's what you learn after you know it all that counts""Things turn out best for the people who make the best of the way things turn out."

When it comes to leadership and team building, few professions compare with the ranks of organized sports coaches. From the ranks of coaching we have been given a vastness of leadership training with which to shape and improve our lives. Every venue of athletics has made its' coaching contributions. From football, we have the hard nosed precision of Vince Lombardi and the stoic presence of Bear Bryant. Baseball has given us the lighthearted leadership of Casey Stengal and the chess game cunning of Jim Leyland. Boxing has produced such brilliant motivators as Lou Duva and the no-nonsense yet compassionate Eddie Futch. And basketball has been no exception from the explosive emotionalism of Bobby Knight to the intensity of Pat Summitt. But even among such greats as these, when it comes down to success, few can even be mentioned with the name of John Wooden. His leadership and team building philosophy differs from many, lacking the emotionalism and intensity of what coaches typically display, and I wont go so far as to say Wooden's methods are better, but they certainly proved to be a championship building formula for him. In fact, Wooden even guarded against allowing emotions to reign supreme in his players. The book focuses primarily on Wooden's 15 component Pyramid of Success. Wooden explains why each component is a part of the pyramid and why it is located where it is within the pyramid. There are also bits and pieces of letters to his teams as well as brief comments from his former players throughout the book.I don't believe this is the best book with Wooden's name on it, but it is certainly, as expected, filled with sage advice ranging from simple profound statements to more complex principles of leadership, team building and ultimately, success. If you appreciate, as I do, that the coaching profession has produced some of the greatest leaders of the last century and you want insight from one of the best of the best, you'll appreciate this book.

Johnny Wooden has published many books, but this one is not so much about basketball as it is about how he formed his great chracter and passed it on to others under his leadership. Every member of Congress should read it and apply it and if they did this country would be a lot better off! Wooden's records are a direct result of his discipline and how he transferred that to his players on and off the court. His ten NCAA titles will never be broken and will remain as one of the great records in sports. Norman Jones, Ed.D. author of Growing Up in Indiana:The Culture & Hoosier Hysteria Revisited

Amazingly inspirational! This is a book you can read over and over and still get qreat wisdom from it.

If you are looking for ways to build on your leadership development, this is a good read. This book is about real life experiences that allows the reader to gain insight on how the legendary coach built championship teams by remaining true to himself.

Great book especially in used condition

wish I had this book when I was in high school. It was a conformation of all the "right" methods of management and leadership that it took me 60 years to learn. Every young person, and anyone that has influence over any body from employees to grand kids should read and take notes to pass Coach Wooden's views.

Kind of funny how they left a ginormous part from the movie out of the book- basically about how his flying started. Probably because in the movie he got drunk leading to the parts of him learning to fly. Otherwise it's cute. Not as much animation in this one with characters talking, but the narrator is really good none-the-less.

This was a great book that allowed you to get a good feel for the upcoming movie. As you read and listen to this CD you will know what to expect as you watch this exciting new movie. I loved hearing the voices of the actors from the movie as well.
