About the Author
Dominique DuBois Gilliard is the director of racial righteousness and reconciliation for the Love Mercy Do Justice (LMDJ) initiative of the Evangelical Covenant Church (ECC). He serves on the boards of directors for the Christian Community Development Association and Evangelicals for Justice. In 2015, he was selected as one of the ECC's "40 Under 40" leaders to watch, and the Huffington Post named him one of the "Black Christian Leaders Changing the World." An ordained minister, Gilliard has served in pastoral ministry in Atlanta, Chicago, and Oakland. He was executive pastor of New Hope Covenant Church in Oakland, California and also served in Oakland as the associate pastor of Convergence Covenant Church. He was also the campus minister at North Park University and the racial righteousness director for ECC's ministry initiatives in the Pacific Southwest Conference. With articles published in the CCDA Theology Journal, The Covenant Quarterly, and Sojourners, Gilliard has also blogged for Christianity Today, Faith & Leadership, Red Letter Christians, Do Justice, and The Junia Project. He earned a bachelor's degree in African American Studies from Georgia State University and a master's degree in history from East Tennessee State University, with an emphasis on race, gender, and class in the United States. He also earned an MDiv from North Park Seminary, where he served as an adjunct professor teaching Christian ethics, theology, and reconciliation.

Building on the work of Bryan Stevenson and Michelle Alexander, Gilliard's contribution is a robust explanation of how the church has played a role in contributing to unjust mass incarceration system currently at work in our country. Gilliard exposes the link between bad atonement theology (which is rampant these days in more conservative Protestant circles) and harmful approaches to justice. In its place, Gilliard offers a way forward for the church and the criminal justice system for justice that restores and is in line with the heart and character of God.
This book provides detailed context, the ways in which our current justice system is dramatically flawed, how the church’s theology is connected to mass incarceration, what the Bible says about justice, and how the church can lead a movement of restorative justice. “Rethinking Incarceration†not only builds upon ideas and foundations built by Angela Y. Davis, Michelle Alexander, and Bryan Stevenson among others, but because it was written for the church, it also has the specific distinction of providing tangible steps for Christians who are interested in biblical justice. While other books on the topic have the tendency to leave the reader overwhelmed and discouraged, Gilliard empowers the reader to be part of changing the broken justice systems at hand.
This is the most insightful book I’ve ever read on race. It is heart breaking and hopeful. Dominique Gilliard fills the pages with facts, history and crafts every word with care.If you are white and follow Jesus and you don’t understand why race and incarceration are a big deal. Please. Please read this book.
I was excited to get this book because the idea of a theologian discussing mass incarceration and racism is intriguing. However, to me, it was incomplete.The opening half of the book, where the author most heavily discusses incarceration and systemic racism within the criminal justice system, is best described as a rehash of Michelle Alexander's "The New Jim Crow." And, to be fair, the New Jim Crow is the authority on the subject. But this topic is too expansive to rehash and summarize. It leaves too many too chunks of meat left on the bone and the reader is left hanging for more information. Granted, this will spark curiosity and possibly further reading, but low hanging fruit is never a bad thing.I also felt that the biblical referencing was incomplete as well which probably hurt the most. I found the author too many times simply referencing a Bible verse/passage and then not saying what that passage says.Too many times I had to stop reading and Google the referenced verse to see what it even said. This made for a choppy reading experience and it was off putting.Did I learn stuff? Sure, but I feel like there could have been more.

Rethinking Incarceration uniquely contributes a critically necessary theological assessment of our carceral state while also providing a theological corrective that is both creative and faithful to Scripture and Christian tradition.However, Gilliard not only examines the topic from a high-level viewpoint, but also grounds it into a call for Christian ministry and engagement.An important resource for followers of Jesus who are not only interested in learning more about prison industrial complex from a theological point of view but also motivated to do something about it.
Dominique DuBois Gilliard does a truly masterful job of explaining the history and current reality of mass incarceration and the criminal justice system in the US. He outlines the common pipelines that lead to prison, while also giving the reader context and understanding of systems and structures that are designed to implement retributive rather than restorative justice. The statistics, facts and stories will blow your mind and cause you to never look at prison or law and order the same again. Dominique dedicates the final third of the book to addressing a biblical approach to mass incarceration and the responsibility toward those who are incarcerated. This is a must read for anyone who follows Jesus, and also for those who have an interest in understanding criminal justice. As someone who engages regularly with men who are incarcerated, I both highlighted almost every page in this book, and have recommended it to everyone I know.
This is one of the best books I’ve read about racial injustice and the criminal justice system. Gilliard combines scripture, history, statistics and theology to urge the church to wake up and take action. The author takes the reader through the development of both the prison industrial complex and the laws that led to the current crisis we are in. He provides ways and examples of how the church can change their actions and serve those who we are commanded to love and care for. Gilliard’s writing is convicting and inspiring and I am grateful for his witness.
If I had the option of giving this book six stars, I would. Without hesitation. It's theologically robust, intellectually challenging and deeply convicting on a topic that should not be ignored. How we deal with those whom the society deems the least of these speaks volumes about who we are as a culture. Historically and currently, we're failing. Badly. DuBois Gilliard does not shame or blame. Instead, he presents compelling facts and challenges us to help transform the prison system.
