Why do almost half the citizens believe climate change is not real, despite almost universal consensus among climatologists? Are we deluded by faulty information, biased news reporting, media silence on the subject, religious teachings and strictures; entrenched beliefs and ideologies that do not accommodate such a reality, or have our brains just not evolved to a level capable of recognizing global warming as an existential threat to our very existence? Or, are we just too heavily influenced by culture and societal groupings that oppose action on global warming because of threats to vested economic interests. These questions have intrigued me for a long time. The answer is all of the above. The book by Andrew Hoffman delves into these questions and helps to answer them. The issue is like a Sword of Damocles that hangs over civilization. It is very perplexing and disturbing that not only can we not even acknowledge it, we cannot begin to take steps to combat it.Hoffman's book makes clear that we are influenced by group values, and cultural identity can overpower scientific reasoning. We employ ideological filters influenced by group values and we generally endorse the position that most directly reinforces our connections with others in our referentgroup, which strengthens our definition of self. These belief structures are resistant to change. We give greater support to evidence or arguments that support our pre-existing beliefs.According to Hoffman, people whose values are hierarchical and individualistic are more likely to be skeptical of climate change. People with egalitarian and communitarian values tend to support the notion of climate change. We may continue to deny the reality of global warming, but will finally reach a point where it can no longer be ignored. More extreme weather, as it hits and affects all segments of society, will open our eyes as we experience ever more violent hurricanes and tornadoes; floods, extreme drought, fires, water shortages, rising ocean levels. Just as tobacco companies were sued for damages to public health, fossil fuel companies and polluters will be sued for damages. The book is a typical Social Scientists exploration of the different reasons why the general public, excluding scientists, either accept or reject the science or the factual information proving the degradation of our dear Planet Earth, mainly as a consequence of the human activities of burning fossil fuel over the last decades or century. The author seem to suggest that the vast institution and infrastructure that’s surrounding the fossil fuel industries – which is what drives the economy to a larger extent – must be completely changed, and resistance from vested interests should be expected. Although I agree with most of the points, if not all, that he made in the book but I will have to disagree with him here to an extent, because he seemed to suggest a complete overhaul of the industries which is a bit unrealistic I believe. A more inclusive process that galvanizes not just the general public but also the fossil fuel industries to accepting a well evaluated policy of reducing carbon emissions to a bearable minimum is what I believe will work and what I’ll suggest. It was a short, fascinating and an enlightening read over all, anyone who is interested in Climate Change Communication should find the book very useful.

I purchased this book to see if it would work as a resource in a class on human impact on/ of climate change I am teaching next fall. I am really glad I did! How Culture Shapes the Climate Change Debate explores the social and political dimensions of resistance to thinking about climate change, identity politics, and the importance of considering the words we use to discuss scientific topics in order to make them less threatening and more accessible to our audience. With examples that show parallels between public/ political climate change discussions and those on the ozone hole, smoking and cancer, and other sciencey social issues, and practical advice for communicating effectively about these issues, this book has a lot to offer anyone engaged in the discussion - maybe especially those of us who teach about it.

Hoffman's book is a breath of fresh air for those of us who are frustrated about the climate change debate. His insights provide a new perspective from which to view an old topic. Comparisons with the abolition of slavery and the link between cigarette smoking and cancer offer hopeful scenarios for massive culture change. Even his suggestions about how to discuss the topic at the dinner table were inspiring. Put this book on your must read list.

It's not easy to change long existing ways of thinking.Much respect to author for giving due respect to my struggle to get the public to pay more attention to safe cooking temps and use of quality digital thermometers. You would think with the price of meat, that the public would be more attentive investing in a quality thermometer, but sad reality is that many still do guess work. Much myth busting too, will likely have you a bit hesitant. I am in total agreement that buying a steak bone in, is a waste of money, with belief that it will be more flavorful. Agree that the extra taste is so minimal that you are wasting money paying what ever price per pound of meat, that includes the bone, and paying the meat price. I don't want to "give away" all the myth busters, just citing an example.If any hesitancy, try his tips and methods gradually and you will be convinced.

For years I have bought book after book to learn every secret I can about BBQ. Of all the books I've bought, this one is by far, leaps and bounds ahead of the rest. Honestly, you will find every trick you will find in the rest Righetti here in one book. The sauces, rubs, techniques and even methods not commonly thought of as the norm but are far better than what is commonly used. This book will take your BBQ skills right into the professional level . If you only buy one BBQ book in your life, this is the one hands down. I personally have over 1/2 a dozen various smokers & grills I cook outdoors more than indoors so trust me when I say, this is the finest publication on BBQ of all time.

I am an old BBQ cook, a certified BBQ Judge, and a reader of Meathead's columns. He is the expert in ALL the many types of BBQ's that exist and he reports not about emotion or promotion of a cooker but about it from a technical basis and you really do learn wonderful ways to do BBQ.Over my 30 some years of BBQ cooking, I have changed types and styles of cookers from plain to fancy pellet rigs and now back to the fantastic Pit Barrel Cooker using just old fashioned charcoal. There are very few cookers that can cook the quality and quantity of meat that a Pit Barrel can turn out and taste so spectacularly good.I own over 130 BBQ cook books and this one is the Bible and the ideas, suggestions and recipes are always dead on. Meathead has cooked them.You will enjoy this book and it will make a grand gift to a new BBQ fan. Remember, BBQ is America's gift to the culinary world.

Bought the book after finding Mr. Goldwyn's recipe for corning your own corned beef online. In his recipe, I noticed that his comments about nutrition and chemistry were spot on (I have at least the rudiments of a scientific education) rather than the collection of anecdotes and old wive's tales that seem to permeate much of the cookbook genre. While still involved in the brining of my first batch of homemade corned beef, I have read a good deal of his book, and decided that I definitely made the right decision to buy it. I'm still awaiting the results of Corned Beef a la Meathead, and may expand on my review depending on the result! For the present, my reading has convinced me that he knows, not only the recipes and tried and true mechanics of barbecuing (and brining/smoking), but the actual science behind the art. Since cooking is both an art and a science, I regard this, so far, as a classic of no mean proportions.I've now made three batches of corned beef (about ten pounds per batch) with his method, and have decided that I'll never buy corned beef in the package again. I followed his online recipe religiously and have never tasted better. All of the people I've shared my product with agree.

He has a fun teaching style, and if you pay attention you learn about cooking, not just recipes.Learning about the Myths and How to Do It Right are enough. But then you get invaluable advice on grills, tools, and how to use them. Bonus is the recipes that he has developed, along with rubs and sides.This would make a Fantastic Gift for anyone that has a grill...

This, and Franklin's book, will always have a place on my shelf.I own 3 smokers. A barrel wood/charcoal, an upright wood/charcoal and an electric. Where Franklin changed how I make Brisket, Meathead changed how I do many other things. Every year I pick out a new thing to grill/smoke and "perfect". This year I picked burgers (because honestly before I might as well have been making mini meatloafs and throwing them on buns because I'm really not that much of a burger buy). Following his advice and methods, I've made some darn good burgers this year already and am still working on getting everything just right. But there's so much more in this book, so many concepts, descriptions, and I particularly like how he plays mythbuster on so many things (for example, no real need to let meat rest before slicing, which is huge to me).Get this, and get better at what you cook, whatever it is.

I have no real experience but have been researching home distilling through multiple books. If you are in that category, this is the book for you. I feel I could use this book and a couple youTube videos and make my first run fine. I particularly like the advice in the build-or-buy chapter. This is the 3rd book I've gotten on the topic and this one is the best for me.

This book has almost no useful information if you are going to actually distill something. Do yourself a favor and look up homedistiller.org

There is a lot of good information on here for the beginning hobbyist. The book has a good technical information about the distilling process if that is what you are looking for, but it also gets to the point rather quickly which I appreciate. I have tried some of the recipes in the book and they have all worked well. I think the book is a good starting point but I have tweaked some of the recipes to for my personal preferences.

My rating isn't regarding the book itself. I gave it to my hubby for Christmas, telling him he could follow up with the equipment if he liked what he read. I am hoping to make my own bourbon this fall using my own corn from my garden. This book really breaks down the science behind making your own liquor. There are some recipes in the back that help you with the process. I am guessing if you are into adventure for your pallet I bet you can take the base recipe and create your own.

So I own all of the volumes of His favorite. Its amazing, it's funny, with just a hint of BL that caters to my yaoi loving need. With this being the 10th volume I was super excited to see were their relationship was going and was even wondering if they would get more lovey dovey. But..um...That didn't happen.To be honest I loved the book, it was still funny and I loved Sato teasing Yoshida. But I was honestly expecting a bit more. I wanted to see their relationship develop more romantically but overall it felt like they were just 2 dude's who said they were going out together and were just kinda touchey feely with one another. If you don't count hand kisses you could count the amount of times they smooched in the book with one hand.Volume 10 is still a good book to have in your collection and its a lot thicker than the other volumes I have from this series. If your looking for a VERY VERY STRICTLY shounen ai book of 2 dudes who don't mind sharing kisses and their daily lives at school then this book was meant for you. If your looking for something other than that...maybe look elsewhere it won't be hard to find something.Still would definetly recommend and so happy to add to my collection 💗

This volume was refreshing. Finally, we're getting decent character development that doesn't go at a snail's pace. While there's still plenty of humor and fluff, it was a nice change of pace to get a good chunk of insight to the boys' feelings. They're becoming more honest with each other.

This book has 2 of my favorite episodes in it. The marathon race and Sato getting a fever are two of the best stories in the whole series, in my opinion. The humor in these stories is as fantastic as always. Unfortunately, this one also contains the banana peel/amnesia episode, which is just terrible. I think it's the worst of the whole series, so I dinged this book a star because of it.There's also a story about not-green-tea madeleines which falls between the two, but isn't bad as a story by itself.

Another great continuation as always. Volume 10 was particularly fun because of how Sato is slowly changing his behavior at school now that everyone knows his secret! Lots of openly sadistic scenes in this volume for plenty of fun. Can't wait for more!

Volume 10 of this bl manga is very funny and it reveals a lot about Sato 's past also his relationship with his mean family members who don't understand about his relationship with yoshida

I've been following this manga for a while. It is such a quirky and fun read. The characters are what really make this special with such off-the-wall unique personalities.

I love Vol 10 because Sato gets the tables turned on him a couple of times. We also see Sato blush and smile. What I like best is now that Yoshida & Sato's relationship is in the open, Sato doesn't care who knows about it. Torachin and Yamanaka make a very brief cameo.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I got the first book in this series but I really loved both the story and the art once I got into it. I liked the characters, even the ones with the rather iffy personalities. No cute uke here just a rather goofy looking guy surprised by the love of his rather sadistic seme. The story is moving a bit slowly but I like the way the characters are developing.

That every man might hurt me.Abbie has a wonderful and fulfilling career and certainly doesn't need a man to complete her but Cameron is a born romantic and takes their relationship at Abbie's pace. He is funny, sexy, smart and completely charming. Abbie the witchy woman and Cameron the king of woo. These two had me spellbound immediately after reading the first chapter. I was intrigued as they were when they caught each other’s gaze in that Sunny Side Cafe drinking coffee. Their looks said it all as did their hilarious coffee mugs but it was Abbie’s quirky, cautious and sarcastic personality that screwed it all up. Luckily fate strikes again and that second interaction in The Violet Hour is filled with chemistry and of course Abbie’s BFF , the hilarious and fabulous Bree who makes sure that Abbie has a second chance with Cameron at the Sunny Side Cafe.From that moment on Abbie and Cameron story is a delicious slow burn to get to know one another through words. Yes, they communicate through Airdrop while they sit in the cafe. It’s different and gives their interaction and relationship a more intimate feel. There’s a reason why they choose this way of getting to know one another and I won’t spoil it here. I enjoyed every aspect of this story and when they took it one step forward to actually dating and being intimate I was already head over heels in love with both Cameron and Abbie. He wooed me and Abbie made me laugh. Their chemistry was undeniable and sizzling hot. This was romance and I devoured it.Then the other shoe dropped. Yup, I didn’t see that coming and believe me I was thinking about some sort of twist or conflict along their blossoming romance but Kate Stewart had me totally mesmerized by her words that it hit me when I least expected it. My heart was shattered but Kate Stewart puts it back together effortlessly and with so much love and attention to her characters and their story. The topics are serious, taboo and very important. Kate Stewart puts her touch on the story, on a topic that needs more awareness and discussion. The reader becomes emotionally invested in Abbie and Cameron. The pace is spot on from the beginning and kept me glued to the pages. The epilogue left me on a high and with a smirk on my face. The title says it all. This story and its topics feels real and so does Abbie and Cameron’s love. Another smash from Kate Stewart.5 BadAssDirtyWichyAndWooStars

It pains me to leave a 3 star review, because I love this author and Drive was book of 2017 for me, but this one didn’t work for me. It wasn’t as tight or as polished as Drive and at times felt manic.I found the pacing quite slow in the beginning, whilst overall it was wordy or over written with information and conversations that had no bearing on the story.The premise of Cameron and Abbie communicating via messages on their Mac was a brilliant idea but it was overdone and went on for far too long. So much so that it didn’t feel realistic to me and I didn’t buy it.I love a strong heroine and not one that is bitter or plays the victim card and sadly that’s how Abbie came across to me right from the beginning and I lost interest.Cameron was a great character and I thought his secret was what saved the story.......This book has a very interesting premise and a great hero with a very unusual secret that is well worth reading. I love Kate Stewart and the idea of this book. It’s the execution and delivery that let me down. I’m in the minority with my opinion because there is a lot love and 5 star reviews for this book.
