This is a great book for a beginner ponder. Just 2 problems. The first is that the author talks about closing down his ponds each fall--something I don't have to worry about in Los Angeles. The second is that the book says that success with a pond is guaranteed...and then goes on to discuss pH and temp and pests and a dozen other potential threats!In any case, I'm going to start a pond!

This is a great book for any planted aquarium or outdoor pond enthusiasts. This book combines the best of both worlds.

I am new to water gardening and found this book to very helpful. I am adding fish next year. Great job!

While not all of it was completely applicable to pastors (as Jobs didn't have to do a presentation or sermon once a week), there was a lot of nuggets in there for any leader or communicator.The author, Carmine Gallo shared 18 things that Jobs did in his presentations that every communicator needs to do. Here are a few that jumped out to me personally as applicable for pastors.Plan in analog. Before starting to write a sermon or presentation, know where it will go. Don't start with pictures, slides, graphics, notes or handouts. Research, plan, know the goal and then write it.Answer the question that matters most. According to Gallo, when people listen to a presentation they have one question, "Why should I care?" While that is not the only question a pastor should answer in a sermon, I believe Gallo is right in that, if you don't answer this question it will be hard to keep their attention when you get to Jesus.Create twitter-like headlines. This has been written about by Dave Ferguson in The Big Idea and Andy Stanley in Communicating for a Change. Have one main idea you are trying to get across, not 3 or 5 points. One thing, hammer it over and over.Make it look effortless. Preaching is hard work, it is weighty. But, when you stand up to preach, you should be so prepared that it looks effortless. You should know your topic, be ready, confessed your sins to God, preach with a right heart that it just flows out of you.Here are a few other things that jumped out:-Jobs didn't sell products, he sold the dream of a better future.-Jobs explained the why before the how.-The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do.-Your brain craves meaning before details.-In a presentation, start with the big picture - the problem - before filling in the details (your solution).-Always answer, "Why do you need this?"-Ideas are more easily remembered when associated with a picture.

Bought this a couple months before a make-or-break meeting and presentation - I knew I could do better than I'd done previously, but needed some coaching. This really helped me understand the process, and gave a strong confidence boost as well. It didn't turn me into Steve Jobs, but helped me deliver a good presentation that accomplished our objectives, and drew praise from our customers and my superiors as well.Presentation Secrets of Steve Jobs clearly outlines the elements Jobs used so successfully, and (key for me) takes the emphasis off the slides and puts it where the rubber hits the road: my interaction with the audience. Planning and outlining, thinking through what I need to get across, engaging the audience members - I was able to do all those things much more effectively. I still keep that presentation and review it occasionally before doing a new one, as a sort of shorthand for all the lessons I learned from Gallo's book. I've re-read the book as well.Very good purchase - returned in results much more than I paid for it. I'd recommend it to anyone who realizes that they can do better in their presentations, but isn't sure how to go about it. Much more thorough and effective than the occasional articles about presentations you may see in various places, with hands-on advice and examples. And a pleasure to read as well! 5 stars.

Granted, this is not the only book that makes this claim - and it does seem that there is a cottage industry among "communications consultants" who have written similar books - but this is clearly the best one I've read.And, this is for two reasons I think: First, Gallo focuses on one person's presentation style - Steve Jobs - on whom we can all agree that he is a master of this game. And, second, Gallo has done the hard work of identifying and outlining what makes Jobs' presentations really work. Jobs creates a storyline, treats the presentation as theater, and enacts it as performance.With Gallo as a guide - and his suggestion that we all study Jobs's presentations available on YouTube - we are encouraged to have the courage to give better presentations and to stand up to our colleagues and superiors who insist on giving the same old boring PowerPoint presentation, because "it is what it is."The only reason that I didn't give this book a 5-star rating is that Gallo suggests that we, like Jobs, create drama in our presentations by offering a foil or enemy, like Jobs does with Microsoft. I have always felt that this was hokey and unnecessary, and although I'm a Mac enthusiast, I wish Apple would stop doing this. If you can get past this minor criticism, you will rate this a 5-star book for yourself.

This is a cute, well illustrated board book for babies. The colors and illustrations are nice and it teaches a few Spanish words, but it's not the most exciting book and there was less Spanish than I expected.There isn't really a narrative; it's just different kisses from Mommy, Daddy, the dog, the wind, etc. There is a little phrase in English ("Mommy loves kisses, sweet as can be.") and then the following page includes the Spanish for kisses and the Spanish of whoever is doing the kisses ("Besos, Mami, besos.") Every page follows that pattern, but doesn't connect with or move a story from the following pages. I was disappointed by how little Spanish there was; with 10 kissers plus the word for kiss, there are only 11 Spanish words in here. I was hoping for something that would be a little more bilingual.Still, the repetition and rhythm is nice and the baby (4 months) really enjoys listening to it. Because there isn't really a story, I suspect it won't be as captivating once he's a little older, but we'll see.

This board board conveys the simple and powerful message that love is all around us, we just have to tune in. It's now one of my favorite books to share with my baby, It's so poetic, so simple, so powerful. I saw one review that there isn't "enough: Spanish- it's more so a book with an important message and introduces the idea of another language, culture, and that the world is larger than the familiar one we know in our home- it introduces Spanish by reiterating the nouns and message, which are in English, in Spanish. It has a great recap of the words learned at the end. We love this book.

There are many words in English but all the Spanish consists of “kisses...kisses”Like “besos mama besos”Not the best Spanish and English baby book I’ve seen. I’m not particularly impressed. I wouldn’t have purchased it in the store.Update: while I was less than impressed, my toddler loves this book and asks for it more nights than not. I also add Spanish to the story while we read it. If she likes it, then I call it worthwhile! And the pictures /illustrations whileSimple, are cute.

I disagree with the nay sayers I've read. True, there aren't that many Spanish words in it, but this is a good little book for arousing my toddler grandsons curiosity about something entirely new to him. Now he knows there are at least 3 languages: English, Spanish and Japanese, thanks to Chi. It's cute and very appropriate for valentine's day.

Such a cute book and the colors are toned down (unlike a lot of children’s items) so it’s cute to display front and center!

My little nephew looooooves to go around and give kisses after this book. Whoever he tries to give a kiss and they don't speak spanish, he tries to teach them how to say it :)

I had hoped this would have had more Spanish. It’s very basic although cute. Didn’t return but not our favorite.

I think this book is very cute. Especially for our bilingual household. Some of the wording is a little weird but overall it is cute. Most importantly my 18 month old likes it!

What a fantastic resource - I especially love how the author breaks trails down by length, how difficult or easy, scenic, etc. etc. Really inspires me to lace up those hiking shoes and go exploring!

I have been wanting to get out and about on some day hikes in the Houston area for a while now, and this book breaks it all down. I like knowing whether it's something I want to try with only adults or whether I can take a child with me. Difficulty level, length, maps, what to take, what to see, nearby attractions, dangers, and other tips are all included. I love it!

This is the only book I could find like this for the area. It is good and helpful. I am giving it a 4 star because it lists the parks and lots of details but does not provide the phone numbers. A simple oversight but when the book states to call ahead and check certain things, you think a phone number (where available) would be noted. But the book does have a really good overview of many of the hikes in the area which is incredibly helpful. A nice overview since the county often does not have their website updated with necessary trail information yet.

Just moved to Houston in May and we are slowly expanding our horizons. This book provided us with all of the information necessary to go hiking locally. Also gives GPS coordinates to the start of each walk - great for SatNav drivers.Used it twice so far , for Brazos Bend and Huntsville State Park. No problems getting there and information provided was pretty accurate, although more detailed information is available on each state park web site.The only real comment I have is that if one state park has multiple hikes, the explanation of that walk always started with a brief description of the state park - in the case of the Sam Houston National Forest, the same paragraph was repeated 4 times.In summary, a book that gives a good starting point if you're looking for local hiking trails in the Houston area.

As a relative newbie to Houston and one who thinks that hiking is something that we could do only in New England but never here, this book truly surprised me. I had never dreamed there were so many opportunities for hiking in the Houston area! I'm pleased with the descriptions, the maps, the listings of the hikes into categories such as those for children, those of certain lengths, etc. We particularly liked having the coordinates so we could just set the GPS and arrive at the hiking site.

Most people consider the area around Houston to be too flat, hot, buggy, and featureless to make for good hiking. While this guide wants to challenge that perception, it needs some improvement to make the challenge stick.As the title suggests, this guide describes 60 hikes in and around Houston. All of the region’s major hiking destinations are included, and many are featured several times. On point, the guide contains 4 Brazos Bend State Park hikes, 3 Huntsville State Park hikes, 3 hikes in Memorial Park, and 12 Sam Houston National Forest hikes. More distant locations such as Big Thicket National Preserve and several coastal national wildlife refuges are also included. Some nice destinations are featured on numerous hikes, and the author seemed intent on including almost every trail in Sam Houston National Forest. For this concentration in the hike selection, I docked this guide a star.Each hike features a map and an elevation chart, but some of the maps and elevation charts are factually inaccurate and/or show the wrong route. The author also persistently calls US 59 I-59 among other route mis-designations. I would really expect fewer factual errors in a published hiking guide, especially in a second edition. Thus, I docked this guide a second star.The trail descriptions are somewhat tedious and lengthy, and they simultaneously give too many trail details and fail to highlight the unique features you will see on a trail. Sentence after sentence reads like “the trail climbs, curves right, descends, and curves left.” Also, some sentences and even entire paragraphs are copied and pasted from one hike to the next. For the poorly written trail descriptions, I docked this guide a third star.In summary, this guide has potential, but it needs a lot of improvement. Despite its weaknesses, the paucity of available Houston hiking guides may mean you still want to buy this one if you plan to hike in the Houston area.

The book has good ideas for Houston area hikes. It will save you some internet research and give you some ideas you could never have come up with. Some of the hikes repeat information over and over for similar areas. I don't need to read the same summary of Huntsville State Park 5 times. The binding is very poor and pages will come loose pretty easily. Good local content though.
