One of Lincoln's most famous quotes was 'A nation divided against itself cannot stand.' This is easily seen in this excellent book on Mayan history. Although they did not have states as we know them the Mayans did have particular cities and areas that were in almost constant warfare with one another.The Spanish came and even with small number of soldiers they were able to defeat the Mayans. One of the main reasons was the Mayans could not stop fighting among themselves long enough to gang up on the Spanish invaders.There are many topics covered in this book including the how humans came to the Western Hemisphere and to South America, the various 'ages' of Mayan civilization, the importance of trade, the evolution of villages to cities, and the various reasons for the fall of the Mayan civilization.The book shows how, as in so many cultures, wealth ended up in the hands of the very few. It covers the devastating effect of Christianity on the Mayans and the greed of the Spanish, the various levels of Mayan society, Mayans and warfare, the weapons of the Mayans and Mayan religion.Their civilization had its own astronomers who did very well even though they did not have present-day type of observing equipment. It explains how some 90% of the original Mayan population ended up dying off and also examines the Mayans that still live today and still suffer at the hands of others.As you can see this is a very complete book. It doesn't necessarily make for happy reading but truth is truth and it's important to know that and to try to not repeat the mistakes of the past.
This is not a book of the history of the Myan people. It is the history of their mythology and includes some mythological stories. Most of the book is stories that are folklore. The stories are like tribal elders would make up and present to the ordinary people. I am quite sure that other than verbal presentation, the only other way of story telling was by inscribed stone stella. The history of the mythology stories is given in the book's introduction and is very interesting. I have visited Maya sites in the Yucatan and in Guatamala and have seen their writing on the stones. However, there was little value for me to read the long folklore stories that are in this book.
Here we have one of the three main civilizations in Mexico , Central & South America. These of course being the Maya, Aztec & Inca . Each made contributions to different fields such as astronomy & others.The Maya with their doomsday prophecy renewed interest in them. Just like most civilizations there was growth & infighting among the leaders. This led to being weakened by the time the Spanish arrived. Still, however, today there are a significant number of Maya. As long as they are alive this keeps the interest of the Maya going.The book has an extensive list of sources for further research.Another super book by Captivating History.
I very interesting read on the Maya civilization, their culture, the fascinating mythology, and the impact that is seen today.

I grew up out West, and we tend to forget that history extends many millennia before 1620, 1000, or even in the long history before Christ.This book shows the Mayan complex civilizations and structures that have existed for many more years than we'd have ever thought. We should all learn about our ancient forbearers, not simply those who came from Medieval Europe, Pre-- and Post-Renaissance Europe, and of the early 19th and 20th centuries.
